Anybody putting down a sport in the PTR packet? Son is thinking about rowing and then received a letter about sprint football. Can he put down both sports if he's undecided?

How does this work? During the summer will he have the opportunity to find out more about the sport? Trying to figure out how they cram all this in during plebe summer.

I think I saw somewhere that an hour or two each afternoon was for sports/fitness. Can't find it now, though.

DD is taking her glove and cleats for softball. She wants to sail as well but is not really proficient.

It is my understanding that during PLEBE summer they will be asked about sports. As a non-recruited athlete they have many sport opportunities and will be required to participate in a sport during their four years. This can be inter-mural, club or varsity. Rowing is the toughest at any school. Bad practice times. Sprint Football is also tough and just one notch below varsity, as are all other sports at USNA. Sprint Football does a big game every year against Army. Some of the Club Teams do some traveling and have away games with area universities. They can request information on any of the sports offered and they are not committed to that individual sport for all four years. They could do Sprint in the Fall, Swimming in the Winter and then inter-murals in the spring. Next year they could do Soccer for fall and change their winter and spring choices. Sailing for a PLEBE is the best. They have hours alone without someone screaming at them. They don't care if you are proficient. They will teach them and the instructors are not Detailers. Just like trying out for Choir. Hours without a detailer.

Singaporemom,
We are in the same boat, my son was thinking of trying out for baseball, he wasn't recruited, but the coach has been in contact this season with his high school coach and told him to go with the baseball team when they break off for sports during plebe summer, then he got a letter from the Sprint Football coach, so now he thinks he may want to do that...I don't know if they have to pick one for the summer or if they can try them both? My son did put down both on the PTR NCAA form

Choices - Sports electives

Son also got a letter about sprint football. By coincidence he got to meet the sprint football coaches at CVW and watch a partial practice. He understands that sprint football is not easy and the commitment involved.

He is considering sprint, but also is considering sailing. He has his sailing certification by ASA and has some, but not alot, of sailng experience. How competitive is it for a spot on the sailing team?

Are these two choices mutually exclusive or can a Plebe do both? Any suggestions / insight will be appreicated.

My son is a Sprint Football player. It is a varsity sport and no, it is not easy. It is extremely intense. The only difference with Sprint is the weight requirement. All players must be under a certain weight 48 hours in advance of any league game. Not saying it is impossible, but the workout requirements would make it extremely difficult to do 2 Varsity sports.

Interesting....I didn't think they actually were given time to play organized sports during plebe summer, other than sailing, running and morning calisthenics. Do they really give them some choice in playing sports during plebe summer? Basketball or lacrosse during plebe summer? Can they bring their lacrosse stick into Bancroft for plebe summer?

From what I understand, they do intramural sports in the afternoons. Recruited athletes, and those who want to walk on to a sport, break off with their respective sports during this time. Not sure if sports equipment should be brought if you aren't planning to play that sport at an IC or club level after Plebe summer.

Walking On - Equipment

If a Mid hopes to walk-on with any varsity team they should bring that gear. Early on they will be given the opportunity to store that gear with the team.

As many have already mentioned, varsity athletics takes lots of time, but the opportunity to be viewed as somthing other than just another plebe is not to be missed, nor is the chance to call upperclassmen "teammates," and foster relationships where there they will look out for you.

You will be given the opportunity to switch sports; my dd did, but doing two would be prohibitively time consuming.

I would like to play lacrosse at either the varsity or the club level, in the PTR packet it says to bring equipment such as my stick and later something about cleats, should I bring full pads or just these two items.

Also my coach worked a camp with Navy's coach and he said I should bring my stick, although it will just get taken away when I arrive.
