Will be visiting Purdue in the near future and wanted to know if anyone had any feedback on the school and NROTC program. Thanks!

We're actually heading there tomorrow to check out the school and the NROTC unit. I will share insights once we return.

My DS graduated from Purdue 4-5 years ago (I forget ). So much is dependent on the staff but I noticed recently that they started up a Facebook page with lots of updates. They clean up the football stadium for unit revenue, the Color Guard performs at games and used to compete in Regional competitions, they train at some Army bases (Michigan and southern Indiana I believe). They have a basketball team that competes with other ROTC units at Notre Dame in a weekend tournament. They meet in an old fieldhouse which houses all the ROTC units. They used to have a rifle/pistol team but may have shut that down due to insufficient air circulation in the Fieldhouse.

All in all, it was a sound unit when DS was there.

Purdue is a typical Big 10 school. The location is kind of remote but Indianapolis and Chicago are not too far away.

My son graduated Purdue last May. He went through AFRotc. Great school and as far as I can tell their Rotc program is excellant

Does Purdue offer a discount for room and board for ROTC?
My son wasnt on scholarhship so I dont know if that is an option only given to scholarship winners, but as far as I know, they dont. On the other hand, my son left the dorm after his first year, so even if it was an option, he never looked into it

... but as far as I know, they dont. /QUOTE]
Just to affirm. That’s correct. Purdue does not offer room/ board but scholarship cadets who receive merit scholarships can apply these toward room and board since fees, tuition a stipend, and a partial book stipend are covered. Just my opinion but I was disappointed to learn that both Purdue and Penn State, Huge endowment schools, hand these future military officers a full bill for room and board. Hope this helps.

At Purdue, my son rented an apartment that was 1.5 miles away. It was 299 per month. Now that was 3 years ago so i would assume it went up. When he moved into the Arnold Air House which was about 10 minute walk from school, he paid 525. Now it was a hell hole but still cheap. Besides the comaraderie of living with your fellow AFRotc cadets, it meant your never needed to drive anywhere and made the concept of drinking and driving highly unlikely. The apartments close to school, new and polished run about 900.
