Qualified?

Hi all
I was notified today that DODMERB has found me qualified for my Marine NROTC program. However, during the eye exam I remember the optometrist saying I was near sighted and needed glasses (my civilian doctor disagreed, but that isn't as important). When DODMERB says I am qualified, does that mean that I won't need glasses for NROTC, or just that my eyesight isn't bad enough to have been a DQ? Thanks in advance, and good luck to everyone waiting to hear back.

Yes I’m wondering the same exact thing. As a matter of fact I wear contacts and have been for years now but I was just deemed medically qualified. I didn’t wear my contacts for the eye exam but I know I’m going to need either contacts or glasses for USCGA.

I suggest getting your glasses because your doctor recommended it; although, it's still your own decision.

It means your eyesight isn’t bad enough to have been a DQ.

If your uncorrected visual acuity is 20/25 or 20/30, then your civilian doctor will probably say you don’t need glasses (especially if you’re not complaining about having difficulty seeing the classroom blackboard or street signs).

However, when you go out to the shooting range, for example, you’re doing to want to be 20/20 so wearing glasses will be necessary. If you’re going to fly for the USMC, then you’ll be required to wear glasses.
