quandry

If each MOC nominates TEN candidates for ONE slot - it's curious how 50% of the nominees get appointments. I would think it would be a considerably lower percentage. But I don't know. That's just the way it seems to me.

Memphis, some of those ten from the MOC's slate will not complete their app, choose another SA, choose a civilian college.......some of them will not be found to be 3Q'd.

Yes, I understand that. You must complete all of the academy's requirements to receive an appointment.

Nonetheless, you can get a NOMINATION without completing those requirements.

The question remains: If TEN are nominated (whether they completed their app or not) for every ONE vacancy - then how can 50% get appointments?

I realize that any or all of the 10 nominees (for each vacancy) can theoretically get an appointment - but 50%???

50% of those nominated do not get appointments.

Nominations average around 5,000 each year.

Of those 5,000,approximately 2,000 of them will be 3Q.

Of those 2,000 that are 3Q and have a nom, 75% (around 1,500) will get appointments.

Now - that sounds more reasonable. Thanks for clearing that up.

Our Italian Coastie has it on the $$$. Further, all MOCs don't nom 10/spot. Some nominate none.

Fascinating, but what happens to the slots of the MOCs that don't submit a slate? Does the academy then have ten extra "flexible" nominations/appointments?

The "national pool" of candidates would be used to fill slots of MOCs who don't submit a slate. IOW, the 2nd, 3rd or lower ranked nominee from an ultra competitive district's slate would get the "extra" slot. (As with the US budget, there's creative accounting involved, since a Midshipman who comes in via the national pool doesn't necessarily "count" towards their own MOC's limit of having only 5 Mids at USNA at one time. I have no idea how THAT works!)

mea culpa

OK. I stand corrected. I did jump a step. I assumed an LOA, not just 3Q'd. Obviously not.

I apologize.
