I interviewed with Sen. Lugar from Indiana this past weekend and yesterday I received a letter that made me think I had gotten his nomination. However, some things I have read on here make me wonder about that. The following is a direct quote from the letter I received:
"Dear Christopher:
It is with great pleasure that I extend to you a competitive nomination to the United States Naval Academy for the Class of 2013.
This nomination enters you into final competition with other talented young students from across the country for an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. I wish you the best of luck. Regardless of the ultimate decision, you should take pride in your outstanding achievements thus far."

So I was wondering did I get his nomination or was I put into a competition for an unclaimed nomination.
Thanks

I'd say you got a nomination! Congrats.

The competition he's talking about is the pool for being selected to actually attend the academy.

You have his nomination. You are competing for an appointment. Congratulations!! :thumb:

It is okay to call your Senator's office to confirm, ask questions, and say thank you!

okay thanks, I was reading a bunch of stuff about primary and other kinds of noms and I was confused.
Now its just time to wait...:thumb:

I don't want to bring you down too much, but what the Sen. has done is to put you on his list of ten candidates that will compete for that one nomination (the admisssions office will select the one candidate that will receive the nomination that will be charged to the Senator--could be you, could be one of the others). The other nine on the Senator's list, if found 3Qed, will be put in the national pool for the remaining appointments. If you were that Senator's principal nomination, that is the Senator says, "you are my candidate for my nomination", and you were 3Qed, you would have your appointment.

Congratulations on this. It's a necessary step.

Yes, you received a nomination.

You will now compete with the other 9 nominated for that slot.

Good luck!

Alright now I'm really confused because I've also just received a letter from Sen. Bayh saying that he would not be offering a nomination and one of the reasons was because I had already received a nomination from Sen. Lugar:
"The Naval Academy Selection Committee informed me they have verified that you have received a nomination from U.S. Senator Richard Lugar. In an effort to utilize the nomination...they have chosen not to nominate you in light of the nomination you have already received."

My understanding (take THAT with a grain of salt) is that some MOCs communicate with each other, so that nominations are not duplicated, so more candidates can by nominated. It sounds like since you have already received a nomination from Senator Lugar, Senator Bayh will not be giving you one, too. You just need one . . .

I'm just trying to figure out if I received Sen. Lugar's nomination or if I was put in a competition for it...

From what you have posted, you have the nomination. There are two ways a MOC can submit nominations--they can rank their 10 nominees 1-10, OR they can just submit the 10 names--that is what Sen Lugar has done. What that means, is that you and other nine nominees are now competing for the appointment.

There are some very good posts on this forum that explain this much better than I can. But, the answer to your question is yes, you do have the nomination. So, you are now competing for an appointment--the final step.
