Hello SAF,
I was just notified by email that I was accepted to this years summer leaders experience! But I would also like to participate in Boys State. If I'm accepted to Boys state (big if) and the dates conflict, which one should I chose?

Thank you,

SLE.. Hands down. It will give you an inside look at USMA for a week.

There are two weeks of SLE.. If they conflict, see if you can switch your week of SLE. If not, go to boys state.

If you need additional leadership points then go to Boys State. If you have enough leadership on your transcript, then go to SLE.

If you can't change SLE date go to Boys State for the leadership points. Also you take the CFA at SLE so that gives you a bit more time to train ;-)

Ask your RC. They are the only ones that can give you an assessment if you need boys state

Pssst....if you're new and not sure who to listen to on this forum, here's a hint: 845something is the one to always listen to.

My DS got a date for SLE and then realized it conflicted with Boy's State. He called West Point and they switched him to the other SLE week because they wanted him to attend Boys State as well. They were back to back. So long and hard 2 weeks. But worth it. My suggestion is to call them as well.

Try to do both. If you simply can't, I agree with @mom3boys and @845something. Follow your RC's lead.

Remember, SLE helps YOU learn about USMA, but does not give you any advantage toward an appointment.
Boy's State is a growth experience that gives you admission points and may teach you a thing or two about yourself.

When I went to Boys State there was a kid that left a day or 2 early to go to SLE. He still got the certificate stating that he had attended. If the dates are conflicting on the backend of Boys State you might want to contact the people running Boys State in your state and see if they would be okay with you leaving a little bit early to go to SLE.

Agree with 845...my 2019 DS contacted his RC and was advised to take SLE over boys state however, it is dependent on each individuals strengths and needs.
