First, If I were to go to the Citadel without an NROTC Marine Option scholarship, would I still be able to commission as a 2nd Luey without earning any type of scholarship (4-year, 3-year, college program etc.)?

Second, does anyone know how difficult it is to get a 2-3 year NROTC Marine Option scholarship? I have heard a 3.0 GPA freshman year and a 1st class PFT will do it, is that accurate?

Thanks in advance guys.

I don't know for sure if you would be able to commision into the Marines without a scholarship. I think you can, but I don't know for sure. I would e-mail the Naval ROTC program here:

MOI - Major Torbensen - 843-953-5173
torbensenj1@citadel.edu

MOI - Captain Rickrode - 843-953-5208
rickrodes1@citadel.edu

AMOI - GySgt Carmon - 843-953-5175
carmonm1@citadel.edu

Unfortunately, with the economy down, there is less money for the military to offer scholarships. Marine scholarships have always been tough to earn, and now are even tougher to obtain. I know some good cadets who are pursuing marine scholarships who weren't able to get them this year. If you e-mail the NROTC department, I would ask them this question as well.

Only 12 (Nation Wide) were given out to folks who are going to The Citadel for class of 2014.

Interesting to know. Expected that to be larger.

From What I understand the USMC is real tight on money at the moment thus the number of Scholarships were cut dramatically. I heard stories of guys that are at the school who are trying to get even the 2 and 3 yr Scholarships with 4.0 GPA's and getting turned down. So truth be told if you were awarded the scholarship, dont waste it in any means because there are a lot of highly qualified individuals who were not able to get scholarships because of funding.
