My DD recently received an LOA from USNA and is waiting on her medical qualification. Her portal (which I still haven't laid eyes on) said she has a Nomination and passed her CFA. She hadn't heard from our MOC or either Senator, so she didn't know the source of the Nom. Yesterday morning, at school, she had a call with a staffer from one of our Senators' offices and was told she received a Nom to USAFA (the Senator only allowed you to pick one academy). The Senator's staffer asked if she received any other Noms and my daughter told her she had one for USNA (I think the Senator wanted to be able to give the Nom to another candidate if DD already had a USAFA Nom from another source). The staffer asked DD which Academy was her top choice and DD said "probably Navy". The staffer then asked DD if she wanted to keep her Senatorial Nom for USAFA and DD said "yes". If admitted she may choose USAFA over USNA but isn't 100% sure at the moment.
Yesterday afternoon DD received a letter in the mail from the MOC informing her that she got Noms for both USAFA and USNA. Our MOC allows students to pick more than one Academy and DD picked USNA as her #1 preference and USAFA as her #2 preference. This MOC Nom was the one showing up in her USNA portal which I confirmed with her USNA admissions officer yesterday morning before the letter from the MOC arrived and before I even knew about the conversation she had with the Senator's staffer.
One of the boys from DD's Civil Air Patrol Squadron submitted his admissions documents earlier than DD (she finished her application a couple of weeks ago) and recently received his appointment to USAFA. My guess is that he also got his Nom from our MOC. Given that information, is it unlikely that DD would receive a USAFA appointment since someone from her (presumed) MOC slate already has one? If so should DD keep the Senator's Nom in the hopes of getting an appointment from that slate? Should she do so even if she has the USAFA MOC Nom (which she didn't know she had when asked by the Senator's staffer)? I think she has a moral obligation to tell the Senator's staffer about the MOC Nom since she was directly asked about it yesterday (before she knew she had it). My question is will that cause her to lose her Senator's Nom or is it her decision to keep it or release it? If she loses it, will that materially impact her shot at a USAFA appointment?
