So.
It was a regular March afternoon, however it was a solid 84 degrees inside. Dad tells me to open a window if I'm hot, but it's the same temperature outside as it is inside. Opening a window would be pointless. I was in a tank top, shorts, with my hair up, fan fully on, but still extremely hot, (the temperature not my looks). So, I did the unthinkable. I set the AC down to 76. Got the lecture of a lifetime from my dad.
Question is, why are you so protective over the AC?

Mom weighing in here. During the summer my electric bill can come close to $400 a month. Everyone has to get used to being in a permanent state of warm and uncomfortable. I am a freak about the thermostat.

Dad of a aspirant Officer here,
Who ever pays the bill and owns the assets is protective of his/her property.

I like it cold in government buildings so my in classroom now the few students are wearing hoodies/jackets, etc. I have a fan blowing on me.

I like it cool at home but my wife always drops it one degree from where I set it. She says it won't kill us.

I'm in Northern Virginia and on the budget plan with Dominion. My electric bill is 91 bucks a month no matter if it's July or January.

We live in a part of the US where it never really gets above 85. We do not have AC and teh doors and windows are open pretty much year round. However... when it gets chilly and folks in the house put the heat on without closing windows and doors my "dad" hackles do start to rise

Impressive!! I can’t imagine having an electric bill that low!!! Being in Texas ours is huge every month! And if a freeze comes our state can’t handle it and you have no electricity for a week! We just installed a generator!

I'm impressed as well, here in Vegas it can get to 115 degrees in the summer, and stays hot until around mid November...

We have gas heat and the winter gas bill never gets above 65 and no more than 25 in the summer. Kids are out of the house and we don't like it hot so don't have to use a lot of gas. Blankets and socks are cheaper. 1800 square foot house. Not too big but not a cottage.

I usaually start with the age-old-dad adage of, "When I was your age we didn't have AC." Thermostat messing I can tolerate but NOT leaving lights on unoccupied rooms. That makes me kooky. I once threatened our c/o 2025 son that if he left the light on in his room once more, the door was coming off...he enjoyed open access to his room for 2 weeks. :D

Even with LED lights that lighten the load on the electric bill, lights on when not needed drives me nuts!

Usually once a season I threaten adding a locking cover over the thermostat, but I usually just grumble and scream when I'm by myself in the car.

I make dat money to cool my honey.....

I prefer 70 in the house and I got a sweet quiet fan for next to the bed... I like I just need the air movement. Everything seems so still without the fan going.

I was the kid that turned down the thermostat (raising the electric bill).

As a dad I still want my comfort. Four years ago we installed geo-thermal and now we have a continuous 69 degrees! One of my best decisions ever.

I am a 58-year-old dad so I guess i would be in that type of age group where we try to control the air conditioner. My father used to do that to me. My wife's uncle who is so cheap rarely allows the air on. He is has a vacation home (in a desert city) where he can adjust the HVAC through the internet. When his wife goes there by herself, he will shut off the air and not allow her to turn it on. The best part is she has no idea how to work the controls at home and the vacation home. I live in LA where sometimes it can be 116 although a normal summer day is about 95-102. My air is working all day. It's only off at night because my wife doesn't like having the air blowing at her when she sleeps. The bigger issue I have with my wife is when it is cold. She is willing to wear sweaters and jackets inside the house to keep warm. In our den, we have a blanket to watch tv. My philosophy is that I should be able to wear shorts and a t-shirt inside the house even if it's cold outside. That means keeping the heat on and keeping it high. Unfortunately, she and my two sons seem to suffocate when it gets hot inside the house while I love it. My point, I am more than willing to keep myself comfortable in the winter and the summer regardless of the cost. My summer water and electric bill is around 1100 every two months and I am happy to pay if it means I am comfortable. The other real issue in my house is that the upstairs is literally 10 degrees hotter than the downstairs and since the thermostat is downstairs, the upstairs is always hotter regardless if it is summer or winter
