Since I have just received and accepted an Offer of Appointment, I was wondering how would it work coming from NROTC. I received a 4-year National Scholarship straight out of High School and I am about to finish my first year before reporting to USNA this summer. Does anyone have any experience with this and could give some insight on what it would look like? Do I just end up filling out DOR paperwork?

I have tried looking at the ROD to see if there is anything, but the only thing I can find is "4-38 Transfers to Other Services’ Programs for Midshipmen," which only mentions Inter-service transfers.

USE. YOUR. CHAIN. OF. COMMAND.

Hint: It’s all the same Navy.

Paging @fullspeedahead

He did two years with his NROTC unit before getting into the Academy. I believe he actually had to pay back a semester if I remember correctly.

My son accepted his 4-year right before getting his appointment, but did not get to NSI, so it never officially kicked in. So, he never actually started on the scholarship (he was a college programmer).

Would there be any paperwork? The commitment starts after the first year - I think my son signed his paperwork fall of 3C year. It's pretty common for kids to drop after freshman year.

I would imagine there is a specific form you are supposed to fill out, as this is not uncommon. If your chain of command doesn't know, you can email or call USNA admissions.

I am going through the same thing right now, however my scholarship situation is slightly different as I have a 3.5 but never activated it because I was waiting on USNA. Definitely talk to your CoC, but on my DOR paperwork, there is an option "91PP Not obligated, special (appointment to a service academy)," but I think this is in relation to owing money back for the scholarship.
