Question on Appointment Acceptance Instructions

I was unsure about this so I called the USCA -- was told a notarized photocopy was usual, however the local (Illinois) notary service refused. I found my tax account would do it and at no charge!

Not sure why they need a "certified copy" of a SSA card, since the background check would likely uncover an incorrect SSA number. Also found out a commissioned officer can attest to a copy.

Because background checks cost a good deal of money, and they aren't there so the cadets don't have to do anything. Getting a certified copy should not be difficult. If it is, it will only get harder after that.

Its a little harder than you imagine. Even the notaries at the New London city hall, where the admissions office sent me, refused to do it!

Check the state rules.. Most notaries can make certified true copies...
if all else fails send the card to me and I can make Certified true copies!!!
I am a notary..... and it is legal in Washington for me to make copies and certify them..... let me know..

Texas Law - A notary may not notarize a certified true copy of a recordable document. Birth certificates and marriage licenses are recordable documents. A recordable document is one that is recorded with some type of entity whether it be the Secretary of State's Office, a court of law, a county clerk, or the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Certified copies may be obtained by contacting such entities. A non-recordable document is one that has not been nor will ever be recorded with any type of entity. For instance, a letter is not recorded with anyone but there are times the sender of the letter would like to obtain a certified copy of that letter for his or her file.

wisdom teeth

I need to get my wisdom teeth removed, but the soonest I can get it done isnt until after June 1st, should I wait to send the dental x-rays after i've had the procedure and notify CGA by phone or letter that my x-rays will be late? Or should I get the x-rays done now and just bring a copy of the new x-rays post wisdom teeth with me on r-day?

I'm going to add a question to the wisdom teeth thing: Should any wisdom teeth be removed before reporting?

wisdom teeth

Suggest that wisdom teeth are removed by your local oral surgeon. Otherwise, these teeth will be removed by the USCGA doctor. Its easier to recover in your own bed with TLC from Mom and/or Dad.

I had mine done by a contracted office while attending CGA....and they did a fine job, not to mention hanging out at the clinic in bed for a day was relaxing. It was quick, not TOO painful, and FREE.

I would recommend calling CGA Dental for an official answer...a point of contact should be listed in your Cadet Handbook.

My daughter has a very expensive mouth..... there better be good CGA dentists to take care of it... LOL.. I (and the insurance company) paid way to much money on DD's beautiful STRAIGHT teeth.. and NO wisdom teeth.. had them yanked 2 yrs ago! :thumb:

This is one of the hardest parts of "letting go." You'll need to understand that you'll have no say in their medical of dental care anymore.

And in some cases, you may not even know about it, unless your swab/cadet specifically allows information to be released.

It can be quite a shock for a parent to get a call from their "kid" from a hospital bed AFTER the appendix has been removed, or AFTER the wisdom teeth have been pulled.

For the most part, I think they did a fine job. I have no compliants with the academy dentists.

I had braces while I was at USNA

I had braces put on while I was at USNA. Its a funny story. I ended up dating the dentists/orthodontists daughter. The when we broke up I found he tightened them just a bit more. But my parents didn't know anything about it until they saw me with the new braces on. As far as quality - I'd give them an A+. I'm sure the CGA is just as good.

I wonder what happens in MMI or NMMI though. She will be active duty Coast Guard by then. She might have tri care or something else. Does anyone know for sure how she will be handled at one of the Prep Schools? For sure this has all been worked out - but it would probably help her Mom to know the details - even though her daughter will be an adult and on her own ;)

Do not worry, dential readiness is a major concern in all the services. In the Navy, at least, ships can be held back from deployment if their crews are not at a certain level of dental care. And, the Coast Guard is not going to invest a lot of money into a Cadet's education and not take excellent care of their medical and dental needs. They will have top flight care for your children.

The Coast Guard has a similiar program. While on a ship I had a pretty good cavity. I would not have been able to get underway, so my drilling had priority. Also, some aspects (like wisdom teeth) may need some work prior to commissioning. The Coast Guard uses USPHS (U.S. Public Health Service) dentists, and I have no complaints from the three different clinics I have had dental work in.

Navy took good care of me in Oki.... :)

I'm not worried.... :)

My son has a similar problem: he has a Certificate of Birth Abroad. Notary here won't notarize a copy. Dept of State says 4 - 8 weeks to get a copy, AFTER I send a notarized letter and the original(!).

I'm stationed in Germany, so finding a different Notary isn't really an option, and I don't want to send the original to the GCA. He sent a photocopy of his birth certificate with his acceptance package: will this suffice until we can get a certified copy? Will the CGA accept a photocopy if it's certified as a copy by a military officer?
