Good Morning,

I live in New York, and I was told a week ago that I will be receiving a nomination from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to West Point. This being said, I have a few questions.

1) Is there any advantage to receiving a senatorial nomination over a congressional one?

2) I know West Point is rolling admissions, so when should I expect to hear back from West Point?

I am fully qualified, and all of my application is completed. I have also received an LOE from West Point, but not an LOA. I have received an LOA from USAFA, but USMA is my dream school, so all this waiting is killing me. Could someone please help me with the information?

Very Respectfully,
Kade

1. There is no advantage of a senatorial nomination over a MOC. A nomination is a nomination.

2. Anytime from late January to April. It is difficult to say. DS was similar to you with a Senatorial nomination and an LOE. He heard on February 25.
Note you are competing on the Senator's slate--that is against 10 others. If you are not the "winner" of that slate, then there are other slots that admissions can use in order to grant you an appointment. There is a potential for a lot of moving pieces and thus hard to give a definite time you can expect to hear back.

Wish you the best of luck!

1) No. A nom is a nom, for the purpose of fulfilling requirements.
2) Anytime between now and 1 May. Some will wait longer, as elements of their situation resolve.

The final applications are pouring in, and Admissions is working its way methodically through all those slates. Think of all the categories of noms as buckets. You are in the nom bucket filled with nominees from your Senator. Admissions is determining the qualified status of each person on that slate (list). They will choose one of the fully qualified applicants in the bucket to receive the appointment that will be charged to the Senator this cycle. Once that is done, all the remaining fully qualified applicants on the slate get poured into a bucket of fully qualified others from their slates, in a similar position. USMA can still offer appointments to candidates in this bucket, but the appointments wil be charged to other nom authorities they manage. The state competition becomes a national competition.

Think about all the buckets out there from each Senator, Representative, VP, JROTC/ROTC, Presidential, other nom categories. It is truly a Herculean task to build the class each year. There are processes happening in parallel and intersecting. Admissions team members work intentionally, thoughtfully and relentlessly though thousands of applicant packages. It takes time, as there are not thousands of them. You don’t want them to rush through your application!

Every year, there will be more fully qualified applicants with noms than there are seats to offer in the class. That is a hard fact.

This waiting is all good training for military service. You learn to focus on what you can control. Tend your alternate plans, finish this year strongly, go PT every day or multiple times a day to bleed off stress, enjoy family and friends. You won’t get this time back again. If you get your wish, at the end of June, you will leave home, and will only visit for relatively short periods for 9+ years after that.

Hang in there - you have a shot, and until you are told differently, you are in the hunt.

Well said Ma’am, thank you for this outstanding information.

Do you know if DS got in?

It all just happened very quickly for me. I can't even believe it still! LOE 11/1, Nom from senator 11/21, Qualified candidate letter 11/21, offer of admission 12/5 (though I saw it on my portal 12/2).
Wow that’s awesome. Happy for you! Hopefully I’ll come back with the same news! I’ll keep the thread updated.

Hey, I had an interview with them on November 21st, and am still waiting to hear back. When was your interview.. not sure if I should assume I’m not getting a nom or not. Thanks!

I had mine November 14th. Every nomination should be in by December 15th, and they also said you would receive a call whether or not you got a nomination.

Also, did you receive a notification that your nomination was attached to your file, or did you have to keep checking for it. I was told by phone I would receive it, but they haven’t put it in yet.

I received a nom from senator, which I saw when randomly checking my portal, but then I got a letter about a week later. I also got one from Rep. I got a phone call on that, a letter a week later (yesterday), but it still hasn't shown up on my portal.

Awesome. I applied for a USAFA nom with my congressman because I already received an LOA, but got lucky with the senatorial nom to USMA

I also received a nomination from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Congrats on the LOA from USAFA. I’m definitely curious to see how things turn out with this app cycle and am wishing you luck.

Same here. Seems like West Point is being pretty generous with people who got their stuff done early, especially with DODMERB down. Best of luck to you as well.
