My D had an emergency appendectomy mid-May. As required, we called and updated DODMERB. They asked for all records, which were submitted. Surgery was routine, very quick and complete recovery. DODMERB website now shows Disqualification D164.40 - Abodominal surgery - history of in past 6 months.

what does this mean? does this completely disqualify her from the scholarship? or will it only disqualify her for the first semester and then she can reapply?

OK. I found the info regarding Waiver Applications on the DODMERB website. So at least the first step is readily apparent.

I am hoping that a routine appendectomy with no complications would be something that happens routinely to applicants and won't be a problem in getting a waiver (according to the surgeon young adults are more likely to have appendicitis than other age group).

any insight would be appreciated.
thx

Not sure of the waiverability odds, the doc will chime in on that...But all I can say is write that letter! I myself was DQed for pediatric asthma. Be sure that the waiver letter is sent to the proper place, you are no longer dealing with DODMERB at the USAFA in Colorado...You are now dealing with CADCOM for your respective service, for me it was CADCOM at Fort Monroe VA. DODMERB will be mailing you a DQ notice in the mail, it will include all information for waiver appeals. GOOD LUCK! Let us know how it works out.

ROTC Mom 2B,

The good news is that you have some time until ROTC starts, and the even better news, is as long as your daughter has healed completely and the surgeon or her physician releases her to full activities, there should be no reason why the waiver authority will not waive this.

If you haven't done so already, I would get copies of the operative report as well as all the follow up visits she has had with the physician and/or surgeon and forward those to DoDMERB. As soon as she is released to full activities by her physician, forward that to DoDMERB as well. DoDMERB will forward all information to the waiver authorities. At the time that you get the release to full activities note I would have your daughter write a letter explaining everything that happened in her words, and also what activities she is currently participating in and if she is having any discomfort. Attach that to the physicians visit note when you send that to DoDMERB.

If the worst happens and a waiver is not granted, the disqualification is only for 6 months, so in November she could write to DoDMERB and they would remove the disqualification.

I would have your daughter call the ROTC detachment commander at the scholl she is going to attend and let them know what is going on as well. They can sometimes (I'm not going to say everyone will do it) contact the waiver authority and try to put a little bit of a rush on the package.

If there is anything else I can help with please let me know.

Thanks so much. I had already submitted all paperwork regarding the surgery to the DODMERB. The DODMERB website has now posted that AFROTC Waiver has been granted and AROTC Waiver is pending.

Sorry for reviving this old thread, but it was the only thing I could find on these forums. I was fully qualified with DODMERB for USNA and USAFA for 2016.

My present situation can easily be seen from my signature and I will be leaving for NMMI August 2nd. I just had emergency surgery (July 5th) to remove my meckel's diverticulum as it unfortunately ended up blocking my intestines and while they were at it the surgeon also removed my appendix, even though it has given me no trouble at all. My DODMERB physical will carry over for next year, but I will have to update it with information on my surgery. I am expecting a full recovery in two weeks without any major complications. How will the DQ affect me, especially with the Foundation route?

Follow-up with DoDMERB when you have recovered and you should be good to go for USNA. Best wishes. :thumb:

DODMERB undoubtedly will request your medical records, including something from your surgeon saying you're fully recovered. Assuming all is now well (I'm not an MD so won't even try to guess at that one), that should be all you need.
