Question re: Recognition of 2014

Our family has a week and a half of vacation 3/25-4/3/10. We are thinking of renting a place on Long Island or in NYC. I have two questions.

1. If 2014 were to be recognized on or before then, how much access would we have to DS if we planned such a trip?

2. What is the relative likelihood of 2014 being recognized in that time frame?

We are Floridians and probably wouldn't plan such a vacation if there weren't some chance of spending a little time with DS.

Thanks for any insight.

Just a little opining and then I'll answer the questions as asked:

Don't plan a vacation with the absolute "must" that you get to spend time with your son. There is always the chance that something changes at the last instant and the midshipmen are restricted, or your son is, or they are required to do some "mandatory fun". Now with that being said even in the worst case scenario you could likely still go to campus and spend some time with them there....now on to the questions.

1. If 2014 were to be recognized on or before then, how much access would we have to DS if we planned such a trip?

If they were recognized they would likely have overnight liberty over the weekend. During the week would be limited (unless this is some school break, I haven't looked at the calendar).

2. What is the relative likelihood of 2014 being recognized in that time frame?

Low. I don't have the recent dates of recognition on hand, but if memory serves me correctly it usually isn't in March

Trying to plan for the future at Kings Point is risky at best. Even if 2014 is recognized in time for your vacation, there is no guarantee of any specific liberty. If there is early recognition and liberty (two big ifs) there is no guarantee your mid will have time to spend with you, as there may be some big project or paper due or a big exam coming up. If you would not otherwise take your vacation in New York, I would highly recommend against arranging a vacation there in hopes of early recognition and liberty. It is difficult, particularly for close-knit families, to adjust to the restrictions on "free time" especially plebe year. I think it would be wiser to plan on spending time
together in June. Also, be forewarned that even that time may not be much. Our DS got only 9 days at home after plebe year before returning to KP to be on Indoc staff. Welcome to Kings Point.

Recognition

KingsPtMom2014,
I must agree with kpmom2013 that it is extremely risky to plan a family vacation around what your plebe will or (most likely) will not be allowed to do during that time frame. I too feel it better to plan a get-together in June. Unlike kpmom2013, our DS is/was a B-split and shippped out from Oakland; because of that we saw him for 7 days before he left for Sea Year this past July. Now he is finished with his first Sea Year and we are lucky enough to have him home for 10 days before he reports back to KP on 10/31. This has been the longest he has been home since leaving for INDOC July 9, 2009.

It's hard cutting the apron strings and have family vacations (or family anythings for that matter) that do not include your son, trust me I know~we are one of the tightest knit families that exist and live about the farthest one can from KP; but it needs to be done and in the end you will see a well adjusted, mature individual that is your son and you will also be a less stressed parent. We have ALL been through this and survived. Survival for our family is 1. plebe year over, 2. Sea Year I complete; what is still left is Sea Year Project, Second Trimester, Sea Year II, etc...it's not over until the end of June 2013. If you'd like you are more than welcome to send me a PM. Hope this helped...

a better chance would be an application for a weekend special liberty. provided that your son is in good standing with his CO and academically, it shouldnt be too much of a problem getting at least a day and a half over a weekend. also, even as a plebe, there are ways to earn long weekends, such as blood drives, exemplary regimental performance, and earning an academic star. if your son keeps his performance locked on, he should be able to spend some time with you.

as for recognition... doubt it. usually isnt within that time frame, but im far from an expert in that area.

The dates for recognition vary every year. It is impossible to predict and happens with little or no warning. It really is up to the plebe class to come together and accomplish all of the "steps." Also, recognition is not typically
regarded as a "family event" It is more about the newly minted midshipmen and is intended to be a bonding experience with the upper classmen and among themselves.
