Question regarding Deferrals

My Son received a deferral letter today from USCGA, and he appears to be staying positive but unsure of what to do next. Does anyone have any information on picking candidates for more letters of recommendation? leadership?

Sorry, don't know much other than what my son's deferral letter said: update file prior to Feb 1, either new SAT, letters of recommendation, and/or mid year transcript. My son will be sending in one more letter (from our pastor) and his mid year transcript. Good luck. We are also keeping the faith!
 
I would try and get as many letters a rec as possible. They can only aid in the process and increase you chances. I'm not saying they will get the appointment, but they will definitely help. hope this helps and good luck

??? Report card

How about report card? We won't have that in our hands until after the 1st of February, but I think will be able to print the grades off the school website ........... Will that be acceptable? (1st semester grading period ends, but teachers have the next week to get grades into the computer)...
 
In addition to updating your grades/transcripts, taking the January SAT, submitting additional LORs, and adding any awards or commendations that reflect leadership, you can request an Admissions Interview from your local AAP. This allows the CCEB to get a personal impression of the candidate and bring out things that may otherwise go unnoticed on the paper application.

PS - a note on sending additional Letters of Recommendation: Make sure the letter writer actually has some connection or relationship with the candidate. Impersonal letters are not given much weight. Think "quality" over "quantity."

Are admissions guys on leave now??? Sent an email to the LT that handles our area but havent heard backl from him in over a week. He told us at a program we attended a few months back, that he would answer our emails and tell us what our apps were needing to boost it for RA, but no response.

The end of February is just around the corner, and it will almost impossible to get anything done at school the next 2 weeks....
 
JC given that it is the holiday season there's a good chance the staff could be on leave.

As far as enhancing your application, if you are involved in sports at all and feel you could play at the college level, make contact with the coach in the appropriate sport. They can put in a good word for you. Their email addresses are available on the web site www.cgasports.com.

Even if you are interested in a sport that you haven't played before but are a good overall athlete, that could be a hook for you. For example, crew is very big. Are you over 6 feet tall, in good shape, willing to work your *** off? That could be a sport you might want to try. Or maybe you're 5 foot nothing and 120 pounds. They always need a coxswain or two.

You've got to think outside the proverbial box at this point.

Also, if you haven't been interviewed, get one NOW! The emphasis this year is on getting everbody interviewed. In the past this was not the case so you know that it is important. If you are having trouble getting one PM me or Luigi and we will try to connect you with someone in your state.

Good luck to all and hang in there. My son was a deferral and didn't get his appointment until late March.

As for crew - my son sent message earlier this fall to crew coach from his on line page - never heard anything. During an on line chat, he asked about it and was just encouraged to keep trying.
My son does crew, has all thru high school grew too much to stay a lightweight - now 6'2", 180lbs - is captain this year and wanted to know what kind of boats they rowed? just 8's, any doubles, etc.
My point was just don't be dissapointed if you don't hear back from coach.
 
I am a rower aswell and i am pritty sure they only sweep. No sculls( doubles, singles, quads, and octss.) that I know of.
 
Actually they do have singles, doubles and quads depending on the races. They usually run all of these at Coastweeks in the fall; they also did singles and doubles at the Head of the Housatonic. In the spring it's mostly fours with cox and eights.

As far as hearing back from the coach, I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as they know of your interest they will keep you in mind and could help with your app. I would send them any clips about your rowing career if you have been doing it already.
 
really? that is cool b/c i row for a sculling school an i love it. being able to scull at least part of the time would be awsome.
