My name's Nate. I was enrolled in independent studies for my freshman and sophomore years of high school, so I was unable to participate in sports. In addition, I hadn't planned on attending the Air Force Academy until last year, my junior year. During my junior year, and now during my senior year, I am unable to participate in many sports due to responsibilities at home. For example, I help my mother manage her party delivery business because she has several medical problems. This keeps me from being able to participate in sports during the week. How should I explain this on the Candidate Activities Record?

Also, as an off-topic question, is chemistry a required course for admission to the Academy? When I enrolled at public school last year, I was given physics, and they said that colleges accept Physics instead of Chemistry.

I can't answer for the Academy yet. But I am going to make an asumption that the USAFA Prep School meets the needs of the USAFA and DS made that mistake. The HS counselor told her to take Physics because she had not taken physics yet. However, not that she is at the USAFA Prep school they told her it would have been better to take CHEM. So if you have the option I would take CHEM. But check with the USAFA first, don't rely on your HS counselors though. Call your ALO.

Sports - Do you have near or most credits required for HS? Do you have 1 or 2 periods off in the day? If you answered no then its still possible to join a sport and practice during your lunchtime.

That what it is with me. I'm was in crosscountry (Season now over) and my coach let me practice during lunch (From 1:15 PM - 2:00PM). On other days, I would either have to workout at night or early in the morning. I sacrifice eating lunch or sleep for a chance of $450,000 but I really want this scholarship bad so screw lunch.

If possible, you should try to join a sport (IMO) and workout whenever you are free during the day whether it be waking up earlier or sleeping later.
