Hi. I will be attending the University of Washington as a Political Science major (tier 3), but would like to switch to engineering. Will that violate the agreement of the scholarship or is it totally fine since I haven’t begun yet? The NROTC website states that requests for a major change may result in the loss of the scholarship. I really don’t want to lose the scholarship.

You need to get permission, but I doubt that changing from a tier 3 to a tier 1 or 2 will be a problem. It's changes in the opposite direction that can become problematic. I'd be sure I wanted to be an engineer and can be successful in the course work before making the change though. Switching back may not be in the cards. My suggestion would be to take whatever courses you need to be an engineer as a freshman while getting in your Poli Sci courses and see what you think. Most of freshmen year is probably focused on core courses anyway. I wouldn't hesitate to let your freshman adviser know you are considering this. He or she may have some guidance for you.

Understood, kinnem. Thank you very much. I appreciate the promptness in replying.

Kinnem is spot on.
I would wait to make the request.
Try the engineering path, if it works out great, switch to a Tier 1 when you've found success.
If not, you're already a Tier 3.
Trying to go back will be harder, especially if your GPA has suffered.

Ikasaru7, my DS just changed from a Tier 1 to a Tier 2 during his 1st semester freshman year. He ran it by his Commanding Officer before filing some paperwork. It got approved very quickly. He could not be happier with his new major.
