Questioning the USMMA Appointment Procedure

As to my daughter giving it another run after 2 years of college - we'll be talking about it as we review her year with NROTC.

Just curious - is your daughter interested in a career as a merchant mariner, or is she more interested in attending KP as a way to direct commission into active duty?

If the former - she should definitely apply again and hopefully the results will favor her next time. Or perhaps an inquiry into one of the fine State Maritime academies could be a way for her to realize that career goal.

If the latter - she should stay in NROTC at her current school.

To sustain itself in the eyes of those who dole out the money, KP needs its graduates (the majority) to pursue employment as merchant mariners, not commission into active duty. We already have a Naval Academy, a Coast Guard Academy, etc.

Sorry for the poor choice of words, I am not so naive or uninformed as to think that simply not getting in was "unfair". In retrospect, I think "illegal" is the better word choice... Let's see what kind of reaction that gets

Did you contact your member of congress's office?

As to "offer of appointment" versus "appointment", there is only "appointment." Candidates accept or decline. There are "offers of admission" but that is just a "civilian college" equivalent. Appointments are specific to service academies. You either accept or decline your "appointment."

From 10 US Code 4341A, CADETS: APPOINTMENT BY THE PRESIDENT: "Cadets at the Academy shall be appointed by the President alone. An appointment is conditional until the cadet is admitted." (Sorry, i couldn't find an appointment distinction in the CFR other then the one already quoted. This is from USMA. This one does show that their is a distinction between appointed and admitted.)

There does exist in the law the term "nominate for appointment." I believe that refers to nominations only, though.

As to whether an Academy meets it appointment obligation by sending an offer of admission to a candidate is for Congress, the Courts and the Academy to decide.

You guys are posting to fast for me to have my final word!!!

@DevilDog… Darn it, now Karm1 will say you are fighting my fights that my daughter should be fighting! :shake: Thanks for the support and slogging thru my long post…

@ Kram1… The reason why they have those little emoticons is to deliver the expressive intent of the printed word… For example: a Smiley Face  can represent S a r c a s m

Since you are the only one to not get my point nor recognize I have provided a reasonably defensible position, along with you stating that being accepted at good engineering schools (Marquette, UW Madison, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Purdue for my daughter) has absolutely ZERO to do with acceptance; topped off by the “helicopter Dad eating sour grapes” perfectly display who the real troll is in this discussion (@jasperdog – I had to get that one off MY back). You know Kram1, institutions outside of Kings Point actually ask for high SAT scores too! As to why she applied at so many schools – let’s not go into the psyche of an 18 year old female – I am unarmed  (@Kram1 – the smile  now denotes an attempt at humor)

OK, perhaps I was a tad harsh on you with the "helicopter Dad" reference...but, you came on pretty strong there with lots of accusations and I am one that firmly believes that parents get way too involved in this sort of thing and carry the grudges to much great extremes than do their often very mature kids. You did mention holding a grudge right, and you are pretty good at the passive aggressive stuff as well...so, well played.

I could explain my points in much grater detail...as you did seem to miss several...but the points have all been made. Sorry your DD didn't get in, but I would think she will do just fine where she does attend. Now about continuing to fight her battles for her........

Read through all this. Seems like sour grapes for dad. Wonder how daughter feels? Maybe his dream was bigger than hers?

Tend to agree with you there AMF.

On the other hand, while I don't agree AT ALL with the original thread comments from this dad, I can understand his disappointment from a father's perspective. You know, maybe it's the first time his daughter didn't get what she wanted the first time around, and it hurt a tad...leading to the accusations that Kings Point was not following the law in its admissions process...not that Kings Point had not been doing this year in and year out for quite a number of year's now and probably has a pretty darn good handle on what they can and cannot do through out the admissions process.

We will all note that it wasn't the daughter who posted here regarding the process. That, too, is not a rare thing. I referee soccer...and I can tell you that when I do youth games, it's not often the players that I have "challenges" with during the games, but the parents and coaches...the adult types who think I am being unfair to their super star kids or not following the rules as they interpret them or being biased against their team in my calls on the field. Often the player are embarrassed by their parents and they let me know it! Funny how that works.

AMEN to that!!

Often said about youth soccer, it'd be great if there were no parents!

Svc Dad, I can relate to your feelings. I know when my DD auditioned for a music program at her college, and didn't get in, I felt very bad for her. I think I held on to the feeling longer than she did. However she changed what she wanted to major in and she is now extremely happy. My DS attends KP and is happy with his decision. As Lynpar in an earlier post mentioned, if your DD reapplies she should apply early, and if she is able to visit the academy that is also beneficial. Our DS knew that he wanted to attend a service academy early on. I think he decided in seventh grade. So we went to the open house the August before his senior year and he applied as early as possible. All the best to you and your DD.
