Questions about "Instructions to Appointees"

Are we allowed to bring a printer after Acceptance?

Its totally dependent on squadron leadership, as are many things involving doolies, so I wouldn't make plans to get one until after BCT ends and you can find out what your new squadron allows. You will get your computer during those transition days between BCT ending and classes starting, and if your parents are coming to A Day, send them a message to buy one (Staples, Best Buy, Walmart, Target etc are all relatively close to AFA) if you are allowed to have it. They do sell a limited selection of printers/ink at the cadet store, so if your parents aren't coming you'll be able to get one there also. There are squadron printers, but using those means you have to go out in the hall to get what you've printed, which just opens a doolie up to "upper class interactions". Not always a fun thing. :shake:

Other things that you may be able to have depending on squadron rules are an external monitor (size up to 24" I think) and a webcam. My son could have a printer and monitor right away, but had to wait until after Recognition to get the webcam.

FYI, my son put some money in his new AF checking account during In-Processing to cover things he might want to purchase (like a printer, etc). The bank had a table set up in Doolittle Hall (where you'll go before heading up the steps to begin your AFA journey!) and had deposit slips etc ready to go. You will get your first paycheck in August, but so much is taken out for books, your computer loan, uniforms, etc that your take home pay will be minimal. Keep actual cash for BCT also since you won't be able to go to the ATM most likely, but he felt it was impt to have a small reserve in his checking account to begin the year.

Printer

In the Instructions to Appointees, Class of 2016, p. 3, it says "you are also allowed to have your own personal printer in your room if you like," and then talks about having it after the academic year begins. Have it sent to you, purchase it from the cadet bookstore or local merchants, have it brought to you from home during Parents' Weekend.

"Dad" (forum name) who has a DS in Class of 2015, said that last summer, he had the model his son wanted sent to the Best Buy in CO Springs, and they went there together to pick it up during Parents' Weekend.

So I wouldn't rule it out, I'd plan for it, but right now it might be more important to focus on physical conditioning than on technology for the academic year. It's probably hard not to be nervous about everything, but keep your focus on one hurdle at a time.

Appointee Web Collection Problem

DD keeps getting email reminders from USAFA/DFR to visit Web Data Collect website and complete two online forms. One is for emergency contact and the other is a survey. She has already completed and submitted the forms twice online, yet she continues to get email reminders from USAFA/DFR that the forms were not submitted.

Is anyone else having this problem?

No, but thanks for the reminder. DS needs to go in and finish the Spanish Language assessment(?). I had forgotten, until you mentioned the reminders.

2nd BFE Received?

DD accepted appointment 13 April. She recieved first BFE in the mail shortly thereafter. However, she is still waiting for second BFE that I understand contains e-QIP info. Is there anyone else that accepted their appointment in April and is still waiting for their 2nd BFE ?

Hi Nav84,
DS has gotten a couple of envelopes in the mail since he accepted his appointment. I don't remember if they were the 2nd BFE anymore or in another envelope. What is eQIP? DS did receive the large envelope with his official PO box # in it, which may have been the official 2nd BFE. Maybe your DD hasn't gotten hers because of the mix up with the online personal information form that she keeps getting email reminders about. Any way you could call someone to find out for sure if they received that info or to get it straightened out so she doesn't keep getting reminders?

Maybe this will help. So far DS has gotten:
Envelope with bank information for Direct Deposit
Sponsorship information
Cadet PO box # (not in the 1st BFE)
Immunization forms
Security Clearance requirements
Tattoo form
Life Insurance form (SGLI)
Uniform sizing form
Parent club info
Oath of Office docs (FYI only)
Invitation to drum & bugle corps
Appointee Handbook (paper copy)

Some things were in the Appointee Handbook (forms/links, language placement test), but most were mailed. The only two things that I remember coming through email were the link to the personal info (in case of emergency) and another more recent email about math placement test preparation.

We have it all in a binder now by topic to keep it organized -- copies of what we sent in, the checklist of what's required, etc, so I can't tell you exactly what we've gotten by mailing.

What is eQIP? Maybe if I know more specifically what you're looking for, I can be of more help.

YorkieMom75,

e-QIP is the online questionnaire for background check and security clearance, what you probably refer to as "security clearance requirements."

The items she does not yet have that you list are the PO box#, SGLI info, Tattoo Form, D&B invite, and security clearance forms.

I suppose it's time for her to send an email to her USAFA rep.

Thanks

I LOVED e-QIP when I was at enlisted basic, because I got to leave and fill out info. To get the info, there were phones for us to use. I must say... I took FULL advantage of those phones. I had to call ALL my friends to get contact info. =P

Address Question

OK, I have an address question...on the front of the Appointee Booklet it has last name, first name and middle name along with PO Box #, but then later on in the booklet it says...cadet address, first and last name.

Which way is right? Last name first or first name first? Don't want to give the whole family the incorrect way and have DD pay the price because I didn't ask.

Thanks in advance!

Unless this has changed recently, we have always sent mail to our cadet as follows:

During Basic:
Basic Cadet First Name Last Name
PO Box _______
USAF Academy, Colorado
80841-XXXX (same four numbers as mail box number)

After Basic: we used C4C First Name Last Name

Third Class year: C3C First Name Last Name

Second Class year: C2C First Name Last Name

First Class year (coming up shortly) C1C First Name Last Name

dohdean is correct, and that's how we address mail to our son. But a couple relatives have sent mail just using my son's name (no C4C) at his PO Box and it still got there. I would say during BCT, its important to use the title of Basic Cadet. It may still get there, but you don't want your basic's cadre to see it addressed to something other than "Basic Cadet first name, last name". The basics haven't yet "earned" the title of C4C.

packing for after acceptance day

My mother will be coming out for acceptance day after BCT. I heard that after BCT you are allowed to bring more personal items, so i would like to pack up the things for her to bring before i leave for BCT. Would it be advisable to pack some civilian clothes for any occations where I might leave campus? I am not planning on bringing any extra clothing to BCT itself. Also, can i bring some pictures/books with me after acceptance day?

Also, I heard that one thing they wil allow you to take to BCT is a bible. Is this true? or would it be better not to bring it?

You can not wear any civilian clothes unless you are more then 150 miles away from the hill, you can not travel in civilian clothes nor wear them until after Recognition. When and if you go off the hill you will be in dress blues.

Also, can i bring some pictures/books with me after acceptance day?

That is squad dependent. You will find out what you can and cannot have when you're on the hill. Your time will be filled with school, knowledge testing, and military training. Do not plan on having much time for leisure reading. Congrats again and best wishes. :thumb:

Not only will you not be allowed to wear civilian clothes, you could get in trouble in your squadron if civilian clothes are found in your room before the end of Recognition. Not worth it!

You can take a Bible to BCT. Cadre might glance through it to see if you've hidden any pictures in it (recommendation: don't!) but will let you keep it. On a side note, my son enjoyed going to religious services during BCT as it was one of the very few times basics couldn't be yelled at by cadre! :shake:
