Quick question about AFA deadline

Looking for some clarification about the AFA deadline. DS is applying for the 4yr NROTC scholarship, and his application has been submitted. In the Fall he was told the AFA had to be with it for it to be complete but for medical reasons unfortunately he had to put the AFA off until this month. We completely understand this puts him at a disadvantage for the board cycle but life happens. Now the petty officer helping has led him to believe the AFA score counts as a supporting document and is due 15 Feb, not 31 Jan - the application deadline. We as parents say be safe and get it in by 31 Jan but you know, teenagers know all the things. He has his reasons for wanting as much time as possible to improve scores because he's been really limited in the time he was allowed to work on the run (medical restrictions, now cleared) but we know, really, how much can they improve in two weeks. (ETA - his times are in the passing zone, he just wants them better.) Please someone with insider knowledge help us parents, since we clearly don't know "all the things" lol. Seems like a large risk to take....

I have two recommendations here. First, did the recruiter state that the 15 Feb deadline for the AFA is acceptable in an email? You would at least have that in writing. Second, on the NETFOCUS website where the application was made available, there is an email for NSTC to ask technical questions. He should verify what his recruiter is telling him that way.

As an "oh by the way".....what does the portal say when he checks it? Does it say application is complete or does it list the AFA as missing?

The general rule has been that anything which is listed on the initial application on the netfocus website needs to be submitted when your son clicks "SUBMIT". I can't remember if the AFA goes on a separate form or not.

He is "probably" ok.......but checking with NSTC would eliminate any potential miscommunication.

Thank you, I will share this with him! We're trying to be as hands off as possible, but a 'trust yet verify' approach is always wise!

My DS was told the Feb 15 date for documents also, but I agree with you. We are trying to suggest getting it in sooner rather than later, but teenagers are teenagers.
