Good Afternoon All,

I have yet to hit up the fleet liaison because I won't be able to call till at lesast my Monday night, so I figured I should ask here.
The CPO (she wasn't mine) that gave me my military recommendation has just gotten out of the Navy, and I don't have a forwarding point of contact for her. What are the chances that there will be an issue and admissions would have to contact her? It was a standard recommendation, nothing crazy was written to my knowledge.

If the Chief retired, she's findable, because of retirement benefits and other reasons - but I don't think you need to worry about it. If you have a standard positive statement and everything else is in order, there should be no need for Admissions to find her. I believe they will be evaluating academic aptitude and other factors and how you stack up against other enlisted applicants.

Quick off topic question CaptMJ if you wouldn't mind. Of all the CO recs you gave to your previous sailors, did all of them get accepted to either NAPS or USNA?

Looking back over CO/XO tours, I would say the majority did, whether to USNA via NAPS or another enlisted commissioning path - IF they did well in officer interview board, had solid academic foundation, had demonstrated leadership and impeccable military performance. I sat on those boards and interviews as a member first, later as a presiding member and later, as a XO/CO, reviewed the packages, notes and chain of command recommendations. If they got my "forwarded, strongly recommending acceptance into (program)," I was confident they had what it took. I took the time to highlight officer potential qualities in an amplifying paragraph. I recall applicants who did not do well in interviews, which are designed to explore motivation and understanding. One applicant told me he wanted to go to OCS because "officers made more money." He did not get an upcheck from me.

There were some applicants I endorsed with "forwarded, not recommending...."

If your chain of command reviewed your package with due diligence, and you prepped the best package you could, it's now in USNA's hands. They want the candidates they choose to succeed, so they look closely at academic potential but also what the chain of command has said. Or not said.

There is nothing you can do about it except continue to be a good sailor. There are other paths to a commission, if that's what you desire.

Best wishes for good news soon.

CAPT, you never gave any "forwarded, with my strongest remommendation for..."?

It's in the package. Did you not prep it yourself before routing it up?
The last bullet before the CO's signature sig says something like 'forwarded for recommend... or strongest Rec...'.
PM me if you have some other admin questions.

Haha... I was commenting the differences among the verbiage as "strongest", "strongly", and just a plain "recommended".

Do you see "Parent" under my name? I am no longer eligible for NAPS or USNA. I wish! :p

Good luck, @CTNope!

Oops, I didn't.
You won't get in with that attitude!
Just change some dates and bam, you can helicopter parent if your DS/DD is at USNA.

You are a funny one! I think you weren't around when I said "I will support and defense..." for the first time... :)

Let us know as soon as you receive the good news!

Edit: what makes you think I don't know where they are, or where YOU will be?

You all will be the first to know after my parents and better half.

Simple, if I don't know where I will be how can you?

Remember: just because you don't know doesn't mean others don't know either. I bet you your detailers know!

More serious question: your better half - he/she is not an enlisted person, correct?

Are you inplying you have some insight for me?

I might... (man, this feels like a PM in the open!)

Glad to hear your gf is a civilian. Last year, an enlisted midshipman candidate has an enlisted fiancé. She was told to choose between him and the academy, so she left on I day. Just didn't want to see you in the same boat.

I apologize for the thread digressing. Speaking of PMs, you can expect some from me.
Now back onto the thread, I'd like to reiterate that I am an enlisted YN, so if anyone needs help, feel free to come to me.

How long did it take for your CO stuff to get processed once you mailed it off?

@aegisFC, great question for our resident CAPT! Best of luck!

Yes, I did. I was tiptoeing around a bit, focusing on other things. I didn't want enlisted applicants to start poring over their endorsements looking for real or imagined nuances and adding to the stress level. Since you mentioned it, there are general practices when it comes to conveying the message. But everyone is different when it comes to writing style...

There are endorsements, and there are Endorsements:

Forwarded, recommending approval. Seaman Finarkle is a good candidate and has worked hard to prepare himself.

Forwarded, strongly recommending approval. Seaman Finarkle has everything it takes to succeed as an officer, in particular...

Forwarded, with my strongest personal and professional recommendation. Seaman Finarkle, even at this stage in his career, possesses natural leadership qualities, most recently exhibited when he/she .... (walks on water AND created it) I would be enormously pleased to welcome Ensign Finarkle in any wardroom - select him/her, he/she is the best candidate for a commissioning program I have seen in my career. (I did write a variation on this last once. He's a new captain now. Still in touch.)

@ktnatalk is it still true "Fleet seats" go unfilled every year? I seem to remember messages urging CO's to keep USNA in mind for promising enlisted personnel.

CAPT, I wasn't tracking it for '21 so I could not give you an assessment this year. Historically, as you know, there were always unfilled seats from enlisted Sailors and Marines.

I heard there was a Silver Star recipient a few years ago that they were ready to spend an age waiver on, but at the end he did not join the brigade. That was truly unfortunate.

Roger on the endorsement. I was just making sure you were using all your tools in your tool bag! :D

@aegisFC while you are waiting for his response, I can tell you the purpose of the fleet liaison is to advertise and solicit qualified enlisted applicants. He will tell you if he has received all your stuff and if anything else they need. That's why I was disappointed to hear your package hasn't even left the ship yet! If I were anywhere near you, I'd have gone to him and have a talk! Not happy about it at all - hope it is getting off first thing this week!
:argue1:

I'd have gone to him and have a talk!
@aegisFC just to be clear, that's what I'd do, and I am not suggesting you to do the same. Do not, I repeat, do not act unprofessional or they could withdraw the endorsement!
