When I did a little time at Ft. Benning learning the army way of exiting a perfectly good airplane...
1. NEVER forget that your parachute was made by the lowest bidder
2. Tracers work both ways
3. If the enemy is in range, so are you
4. NEVER share a foxhole with someone braver than yourself
5. Anything worth shooting, is worth shooting multiple times: ammo is cheap, your life isn't
There were a bunch more...I just don't remember them all...and of course, wearing AF fatigues (yes, that long ago) made one a target for...attention.

In the infamous quotes category, my first CO, who kept me standing at attention in front of his desk, did not offer to shake my hand, and barely made eye contact:
"Don't sleep with the married men." And, "I've put you down at Port Services, so just stay out of sight."
Let's just say he was not a fan of the first female line officers coming to his naval station.
The slow burn that started inside me ensured that little exemplar of how not to be a leader was a start to me treating my Sailors quite differently. And sending me to Port Services? BEST thing ever to start my career, being the Port Ops DivO for "my" 4 tugboats and mini-fleet of workboats and yard craft.
Favorites that inform my servant leadership style:
"Be gentle and you can be bold; be frugal and you can be liberal. Avoid putting yourself before others and you can become a leader among men."
"When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves.'"
