As Rday and Beast approaches in the next week, I wanted to ask current cadets and alumni their best piece of advice for this upcoming training. Thank you in advance.

Enjoy your last few days at home & being "normal" with family and friends instead of worrying too much. I regret that. But just remember that most of your cadre are two years older than you (my age) and that they want to see you succeed. Beast isn't all that hard; I would say getting through the academic year is far more difficult, in a different way.

You should search the SAF site. There are dozens of threads over the last several years on this topic, with much of the info for any of the SAs applying to the summer for cadets/mids/swabs.

  • Take it one day at a time. Don't think about how many days/weeks until Beast is over, rather think about how many hours/minutes until lights out each night.
  • Do not make ANY big decisions during Beast, especially about quitting. You can not make sound, rational decisions while under the stress of Beast.
  • No one sails through Beast - it is designed to make even the best screw up at some point. Keep a good attitude, do your best, and you will earn the respect of the cadre.
  • Never forget this - "Cooperate and Graduate." Your squad/classmates will succeed by working together - help others who are struggling and expect that they will do the same for you.
  • Remember, some day you will look back and laugh at the moments you thought were so disastrous.

Make friends and do your best at everything you can. If your good at something and see someone in your group struggling, do what you can to help get them through. You are a family now, do everything you can to help each other succeed.
