USCG PRESS RELEASE

New Cadets Report-In to Begin CGA Adventure

U.S. COAST GUARD ACADEMY, Conn. — The Academy’s Class of 2014 will begin their military training as they arrive here Monday, June 28 for Reporting-In Day (R-Day).

Just 385 of the 4,580 students who applied to the Academy were accepted for the Class of 2014, of which approximately 290 will accept their appointment and report-in.

Reporting-In Day marks the traditional start of Swab Summer, an intense seven-week training program designed to transform civilian students into military men and women ready to accept the challenges that await them in their pursuit to become Coast Guard officers.

During their first day at the Academy, the swabs will cycle through haircuts, uniform issue, drill practice and various types of administration in-processing. At the conclusion of R-Day, members of the new class march onto Washington Parade Field, raise their right hand and swear an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

The new cadets come from all walks of life, from 39 states and the two territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Also joining this class are six international students from the countries of Ecuador, Lithuania, Singapore and Tunisia. .

Below is a detailed schedule for Reporting-In Day:

7 a.m. – 9 a.m. Swabs check in - Leamy Hall

8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Uniform issue, haircuts, drill practice, company time, weigh in and administration in-processing (all companies will cycle through these events throughout the day)

3 p.m. – 3:20 p.m. Swearing-in Ceremony and class photo – Washington Parade Field

Following the class photo, the swabs will have a short time to spend with their families before returning to training.

Wow....I can't believe the time has finally come to make the long awaited journey to New London. I get goosebumps just thinking that in a few short hours, my son's dream will soon be coming true! I am so honored that my son will be standing with 289 of the FINEST young men and women in this country. From Luigi's post, it looks as though they will be coming from all over this wonderful country of ours (and regions beyond).

I want to thank all of you who helped us through some of the stressful moments ranging from the medical waivers, to girlfriend issues! I have made some wonderful friends from this post, and I know I will be making many more on Monday!!!

Here is to The United States Coast Guard Academy, Class of 2014. Stay safe and strong through this journey of a lifetime.

GO BEARS!!!!

Good Luck 2014!

I am so happy to be on the well-wishing end of things this year! The class of 2014 is in for a great ride, and for those on the side lines it really does go so fast! Enjoy every minute and know that your swabs are in great hands. The Cadre will take great pride in molding these already amazing youngsters into even more amazing young adults!! It's been such a privilege to watch the class of 2013 go from 295 nervous and anxious kids on Rday 2009, into confident and smiling 3/c who are thriving in their summer assignments on cutters, at small boat stations and aboard Eagle.

Good luck 2014!

Yesterday was R-Day. As a member of the class of 2013 here at the Academy and not in summer school, I was able to see a lot of the things going on and I just wanted to let each and every one of you know that the incoming class looked pretty good. Congratulations to my shipmates who were deferred to this class: you've got a leg up, use it.

Your swabs will have a great summer. I've worked with their cadre for a year now, and I've seen them in action these past two days. They're in good hands.
