haha, my brother is second year at USMA and he got accepted into UC Berkley for rugby/rotc scholarship. he said there were a bunch of homeless people and hippies there

where is the moderator on this? these are awful, unnecessary, unfounded things to be saying, especially online.

Thank you for not being ignorant like most of the other [redacted] kids who read that. I was at a friends house and ate 100 dollars worth of his brownies oops. You people who are bagging on people who smoke pot don't know what your talking about.. Even though I dont do it myself i know people who do and there is nothing wrong with them and the drug is harmless. I just hope that this mistake wont compromise my appointment. [redacted]

First, let me state that I'm sure she's not even filled out an academy application, let alone received appointment. And secondly, this is about her third moniker here in a few weeks, and it's not worth arguing with a disgruntled pot head.

To any others reading this thread, I got the "wink...wink"...it was an accident that I ate $100 of my friends pot...wink...wink...can I smoke pot till I show up?" but, I was posting my thoughts to the real candidates here, clarifying the lie that smoking pot is no big deal and that there's nothing wrong with smoking pot.

It will be ohkay

You'll pass the test, I've heard more than a few stories of cadets who've had a "scare" before R-day. But the test, at least for last year's Beast, was the second or third day. And don't worry about the test, it was a urine test.

Future weight standards in the military aren't really helped by eating $100 of desserts....even if it's a great dessert at Finale in Boston.

I guess I wonder how you knew it was $100 of brownies...and how long was it until you figured out that was a "sugar rush" you were experiencing.

I kind of remember high school (I think), and I remember not being born yesterday.

When you apply and they ask "have you ever done drugs", the answer is "Yes" for you. When you're getting your security clearance, that question may come up again. You can't change what you did in the past, but I would recommend not trying to cover it up.

lol how was it wrong it was an accident?

Do you really think that just because something was an accident that it is not wrong?

You need to change your mind-set because this excuse will not apply at Westpoint (nor at any other institution). When you make a mistake it carries consequences. It being an accident does not make it right.

i wouldnt be so naive. In my 2 years at the coast guard academy i have found that about 70-80% of cadets drink underage which is also against the law. i hate that it happens too but i can tell that the people who make comments like "someone who chooses to break laws won't make it at the academy" is obviously someone who has yet to go to an academy and see reality

I'll field this as I think my comments might have been construed to the "won't make it at the Academy" lol

First, I'm a parent and never went to an Academy. I was however an enlisted Marine way back when and saw what can and does happen in the Military, so don't say "[you can tell]" who has been to, or is going to an Academy. Any adult or person with the intelligence a notch above plant life, knows full well that Cadets smoke pot, underage drink and do even harder drugs, like the kid caught at West Point with coke last week. Not a surprise.
The difference in my discussion here and the students discussion is, I look at reality with experience, Students have the fear of looking like a "tool" or naive for stating the obvious. Some get it and some don't, it's a maturity level thing that will come with time.

I will add this, if cadets do illegal drugs while at an Academy, and if caught, I hope they are brought up on charges and then, if guilty, deserve to be kicked out and or jail, that's the reality. There is no place for drug usage (oh and BTW, insert any illegal substance I didn't list so as not to play semantics with me) at any age while in the military, it's against the law. Don't like it? Fight to have the law changed to allow morons to cloud their judgment while in charge, leading other men.

Thank you Maximus... as a retired NCO I appreciate what you have written. Guys, stay away from the stuff - all of it. You will be subject to an in depth background investigation for your security clearance. And yes, mistakes happen: limit them by not placing yourself in these situations. You can have all the fun in the world without such things. And you won't loose "your edge" in combat just because your not a partier... that's the television soldier not the real-world.

No exceptions

I remember "June Week" at the Naval Academy. I was a 4/C Midshipman - we were already recognized at the Herndon ceremony. We were actually forming up to march over to graduation. We knew something was wrong - we heard rumors of pot use. One of the accused seniors came out to speak to his (our) company. He told us teary eyed that he would not be graduating that he had been caught smoking marijuana. He said he asked to speak so that some others could possibly avoid his mistake. We had a lot of respect for him for speaking to us. He did not graduate and was not commissioned.

Whether or not drug use is accidental does not change the fact. It might be considered as a mitigating circumstance but like many other crimes doing it by accident or without knowledge that it is against the law or rules is not enough. You are young and will make mistakes, but you are entering a world (of the military) where other lives will depend on what your values are. ABove all take this seriously. SOme other parent will be counting on you in a few years.

You should take what happened to you and learn. Listen to what folks here said - even if you think it was overboard. Keep away from the brownies, get out and run them off and good luck on R day.

Being a real person

Calm down dude, after being here a year you realize that stuff just happens. And have you heard of cooperate graduate? If you're spouting off all of these accusations andalready showing this sort of mentality towards your fellow classmates you'll never get through your four years here. You need to change YOUR mindset. Just take a chill pill and try to help someone better themselves by helping them get here. You don't wanna be known as the blue falcon at this school, and right now your gonna show up as one. Just stop posting on this blog and show up on R-day like a real-person. A fresh start in creating a new life.

Brig. Gen. Joseph Anderson, deputy commander of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, said, "We are not even going to consider" applicants who test positive for drugs or alcohol, or have adult felony convictions such as assault, arson and robbery.

That's for the enlisted side... now plebe do me a favor. Go to the cemetary there at West Point. Stand at the grave of my former commander General Wayne A. Downing and tell him - calm down, stuff just happens.

You will have lives depending on you and your decision making... a great officer makes things happen and at the same time keeps "stuff" from just happening. Duty, Honor, Country.

I value principles and morals over popularity. The honor code clearly states "nor tolerate those who do". I follow the cadet code and won't break it for the sake of popularity.

I never said I will not help others. It is the opposite. I would help any who see their mistakes and seek to better themselves. I will not, however, tolerate those who think breaking an oath they make is okay.

I am not accusing anyone of anything. I am stating the fact that whether it was an accident or not does not make it right. I stand up for the honor code which was made by men much wiser than yourself.

Agreed. And when you get labeled as a Blue Falcon, good luck, because it wont be easy after that.

I find it interesting that all the people who are siding with using drugs and breaking the honor code had their accounts made in the past 2 days...very peculiar coincidence...

BR, there are a few studies that have been done about underage alcohol use...80% looks a bit high. Sadly, I don't have the report sitting on my home computer. :frown:
