R-Day has come...

In my day, it wasn't all that surprising that people showed up "unprepared" for what was to come. We had the catalog (in hard copy), the BGO, CVW (for some) and that was about it.

With NASS (and the WP and USAFA equivalents), and especially the Internet, it is more surprising that kids don't know what they're in for. As a USNA BGO, I talk "cold turkey" to my candidates -- I know that at least a few have suspended their applications after our interview. But, if a SA is not for them, they're better off elsewhere -- where they can and likely will be successful.

I've been surprised at the number of new cadet parents that don't understand that their plebe will not be coming home for visits throughout the semester.

I was very impressed at the briefing with the cadet in charge of beast. He was a very impressive young man!

I was very suprised at some of the questions asked at the briefing in Ike Hall. It was if some of the parents had not read any of the admissable mailings or any of the massive amounts of literature West Point sends. Maybe it's the fact they don't stalk this forum as i do :biggrin:

Billdnc, you are so right! Apparently, some people have not been paying attention for the last year or so while their son or daughter applied to, was accepted to, and made and executed plans to matriculate at USMA. I found it difficult to summon that little place inside of me that tries to radiate love to the world when that man asked "I know this is a stupid question..." and went on to ask about how roommates would deal with different levels of cleanliness. Indeed, this proved definitively that there are stupid questions. Unfortunately, I was sitting next to the Supe so could not just slip out quietly and without notice.

However, R-Day was so well organized (for the parents at least) that I left with the sense of my NC being in the best possible hands. Great job USMA!

Dr.Mom, i was also impressed with the way everything was done. It was refreshing to see the cleanliness of the grounds, the preparation put into all the activities etc.. There were so many things to do, it kept my mind off the fact that my DD wasn't by my side. I think i can safely say that WP is probably the safest campus in America:thumb:

During the briefing prior to our 90-second goodbye, we were told that there were 1,183 new cadets. Later in the day, during the briefing prior to the oath ceremony, the Superintendent said that there were 1,178 new cadets in the class...not sure what happend to the other 5.

Sometime in the late morning, we also saw a young man and his father walking AWAY from the Ike Hall area. The father was carrying a full duffle bag, and both of them had troubled looks on their faces. We don't know their story, but it appeared to us that the young man had changed his mind. It was sad on many levels.

My cadet and a few others had to get final medical clearance on R-Day, and we heard from our FFR of another candidate whose knee was iffy enough that they hadn't stencilled his name on his gear until he saw the USMA orthopedist. Sadly, the R-Day departure is not always voluntary.

No, the date for R-day has not been set yet.

No, the date for R-day has not been set yet.

In the appointment letter DS received from General Huntoon, it states;

"Before you enter West Point on R-Day July 1, 2013, I encourage you to consider the following:"

Has West Point changed the date?

A date change is possible, but nothing is set yet. All the summer training is being reviewed to look for more effective use of time (and therefore money). This could lead to Beast being a bit shorter, which would be ashame if the New Cadets miss the 4th of July concert and fireworks at trophy point.

Historically - R-Day is set the Monday prior to the 4th of July. So sometimes in June, sometimes in July.

Don't do what 2016 did at the 4th of July concert (if anyone recalls) :p
