R-Day Health Question

I am 6'!" and 152 pounds. I believe I just make the minimum weight right?

And what would be a health issue that would send you home on R-day?

A couple years ago a cadet candidate at USAFA fell getting off the shuttle bus and tore up his knee; he was sent home. :frown:

Pregnancy would also send you home on Rday.

Basically anything that would preclude you from the full range of duties.

I know you've already answered some weight related questions. But I'm only 5'4" and weigh around 160 lbs depending on the day. I workout out at the gym and have been running for beast. I have a big upper body, but according to the height/weight charts I am over the maximum weight for my height. Is this something I can get sent home for on R-day. Obivously I will lose weight during beast so I don't see it being a problem but it's been something that has been on my mind the last few weeks.

No, you won't. The question you need to concern yourself with is how you'll keep from regaining that weight. WP is serious about weight.

You've got to be kidding me. People show up PREGNANT!?

My guess would be that they'd have no idea yet that they were pregnant and it would show up in a blood test that day. You know, graduation parties, prom, going away....I can definitely see it happening!

About how long would the actual physical screening process be [for each cadet]?

Since we are going to be drilling and reporting to the "cadet in the red sash" (along with whatever other things we'll be doing), will it be more of a "if we look okay then we're good" kind of thing or will it be a full body physical?

Your full body physical was your DODMERB exam. If memory serves, you'll be screened for tattoos, weighed, measured, and issued your R-day clothing.

I imagine that should be a relatively quick process. Thanks for clearing that up scoutpilot!

From AR 670-1:
Tattoo policy
(1) Tattoos or brands anywhere on the head, face, and neck above the class A uniform collar are prohibited.
(2) Tattoos or brands that are extremist, indecent, sexist, or racist are prohibited, regardless of location on the body,
as they are prejudicial to good order and discipline within units.
(a) Extremist tattoos or brands are those affiliated with, depicting, or symbolizing extremist philosophies, organizations,or activities. Extremist philosophies, organizations, and activities are those which advocate racial, gender or ethnic hatred or intolerance; advocate, create, or engage in illegal discrimination based on race, color, gender, ethnicity, religion, or national origin; or advocate violence or other unlawful means of depriving individual rights under the U.S. Constitution, Federal, or State law (see para 4–12, AR 600–20).
(b) Indecent tattoos or brands are those that are grossly offensive to modesty, decency, or propriety; shock the moral
sense because of their vulgar, filthy, or disgusting nature or tendency to incite lustful thought; or tend reasonably to
corrupt morals or incite libidinous thoughts.
(c) Sexist tattoos or brands are those that advocate a philosophy that degrades or demeans a person based on gender,
but that may not meet the same definition of “indecent.”
(d) Racist tattoos or brands are those that advocate a philosophy that degrades or demeans a person based on race,
ethnicity, or national origin.

Snipped from: (6) Finality of determination.
(e) The Director of Admissions will make initial entry determinations that tattoos or brands comply with this policy for the U.S. Military Academy cadets. This authority will not be delegated further.

On R-day you will be asked what your tattoo means and it will be photographed. It should not be a problem if it meets the standard listed above.

So I am assuming a cross on my left pectoral for religious reasons will not be a problem right?

So I am assuming a cross on my left pectoral for religious reasons will not be a problem right?

I depends on what the cross means to you. If the symbol in your religion means any of this:
Extremist philosophies, organizations, and activities are those which advocate racial, gender or ethnic hatred or intolerance; advocate, create, or engage in illegal discrimination based on race, color, gender, ethnicity, religion, or national origin; or advocate violence or other unlawful means of depriving individual rights under the U.S. Constitution, Federal, or State law (see para 4–12, AR 600–20).
then it would be a problem.

seriously JAM?

What JAM is getting at is that the word "cross" is ill-defined.

It could be this cross:

this cross:

this cross:

or this cross:

All are crosses, and all have different meaning to both the designer and the wearer. Symbols akin to the last two have appeared in tattoos on more than one R-day, and several new cadets have been outprocessed for racist and extremist tattoos. I can think of several I personally saw.

Wow didn't think of those...when I think of a cross, the first image comes to mind. So what does the third image mean Scout? The last one is rather obvious in symbolism...but rather shocking that New Cadets would show up with it.

The third cross is a KKK symbol. See? Not always easy to tell what a tattoo can mean at first look.
