I have already read the 2022 R Day packing list many times, but what is everyone else bringing? I figure I dont need 550 cord, but is this packing list good enough?

- military watch (already on wrist)
- toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
-shampoo/conditioner (small bottle)
- body wash (small bottle)
- washcloth
- hairbrush
- hairties
-deodorant
- razor
- sunscreen stick
- small spray insect repellant

-boots
-low quarters (will be wearing)
- running shoes

-12 pairs of white PT socks
- 10 pairs of black dress socks
- 8 boot socks
- 10 white sports bras
- 10 underwear (compliant colors)
- all-black swimsuit

- mini notebook with addresses
- stamps
-pre-addressed envelopes
- Bible
-pen/pencil
- knife
- lighter
- small box of bandaids
- nametapes, etc
- hygiene products

- paperwork

Should i add or take away anything? Thanks.

Go to a pharmacy and get 'Blister-aid' stick on bandages of various sizes and shapes. Bring extras.

I'd bring more underwear. It's cheap, doesn't take up much room and when things seem really bad, at least you'll have clean underwear.

A good gerber or leatherman. Mine is going strong 7 years from my Beast (which my Soldiers have made fun of me for...it looks like its travelled the world, guess it technically has, but it still holds an edge and rocks). Great investment and has more utility than just a knife.

Don't pack a lot of extra stuff off the list then what you have beyond basic necessities that like toiletries, socks and underwear (in which case, pack lots). It saves a lot of hassle on R-day for having to carry stuff around and most of the stuff will sit in a trunk.

The latest packing list is dated 5/1/18. No court shoes needed. Here it is if needed...

This may potentially be a unpopular post...

I do not have any direct experience regarding USMA, but feedback from my DS is that those candidates that deviated from the approved packing list received extra attention from the cadre on I-Day as well as having the extra items confiscated.

Please be careful when adding items to your personal packing list based on recommendations from family, friends, or well-meaning forum members (including me).

The source of extra attention would be the inability to carry or transfer everything you bring. They will not be counting the number of socks in your bag. It is important to balance need over necessity as you will be required to carry everything your brought for a few hours. The other advice is to back in larger ziplock bags to make the transfer process faster. We ended up sending DD more underware halfway through as some got lost in the laundry.

There's generally a "required" list and a "recommended" list on the list that goes out from USMA. My opinion, most of the recommended items aren't necessary but they're of the topic of discussion here of what additional items beyond the required ones you will need for CBT. That said, 100% agree, if its not on the required or recommended list, think hard about bringing it. It'll be confiscated and given back to you at the end of CBT if its prohibited and otherwise draws unnecessary attention which is never a good thing.

Bring the 550 cord, you use it. Also bring a roll of green or tan duct tape if you can. If not though, no big deal, you will have opportunities while here to buy these things from the cadet store well before you end up needing them.

I don’t think you need more than 4 extra pairs of boot socks. The issued ones worked great for me and I don’t remember running out of socks. Rucking/hiking beforehand will do more good than socks.

I would cut all your sock amounts by half. I do not remember anyone in my beast squad needing to buy more socks, they issue a decent amount.

If you can hold off on flossing for a week, you will visit the dentist and they will give you a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss.

Bringing a small packet of baby wipes will be useful, wiping off dirt to camp paint.

Honestly, everyone is going to stink and have the “New Cadet smell”.

Great! Thanks! Any other packing tips?

Stick all these things in giant ziplock bags. It will make the bag transfer from your civ bag to flight bag super fast, easy, and not stressful. I think I had like 3-4 ziplock bags which is a lot faster to move than 20 items. Do help those around you who don’t transfer items fast, they will appreciate it.

If you want your cellphone after beast bring it with you. You will get your cellphone back the day of or after marchback.

Thanks! I separated my various socks into 2 bags, and I will pack the rest too. Am I allowed to have a little toiletry bag to put my toothbrush and stuff in? Sorry, I know these are minuscule details, but I just want to make sure I am not stressing about these small things.
