MOT - the dinner was very nice. The New Cadets sequestered themselves to one table in a back corner of the room and talked, and the parents/family of the new cadets sat around three other tables and compared notes.
My NC was a bit devil-may-care about going originally (signing up was my idea), but he really seemed to enjoy himself and though he'd never admit it, he seemed glad he went. It confirmed some of the doubts, fears and concerns he was having were not his alone.
The same thing was evident from the parents' perspective. A couple of the parents family members had one through the R Day rehearsal the Friday before and were filling us in on the ins-and-outs of the day. The families with no military experience were soaking up info from those of us with a military background. And the email addresses and phone numbers were being exchanged to form mini-support groups.
All-in-all, it was a very nice evening and one I would recommend future classes emulate and try to attend. Like the entire experience these young men and women are experiencing now - you get out of it what you take out of it; and I think the 10 NCs and their families got something good from the evening.
As a personal aside, Vampsoul ... thank you for organizing the event. You are an impressive young woman and you will make an outstanding Officer. Hooah!
