R Day

Lol. We just made ours for R-day!!! Not sure how my folks feel about booking grad already

So if a parent was going to hedge their bets and book now. Would you need a room July 1st and 2nd for R day and August 17th, 18th and 19th for A day? I am assuming it will be early report on R day so no allowance to come in later in the day? Our household is still in shock a bit that we are so fortunate to know this early.

Yes your going to have to book for both days because you have to report at 6, 6:30, or 7 depending on your ds or dd's last digit in their social security number.

Arriving earlier on Friday for A Day is ideal if you want to attend the tentative Parents Reception. It is a great way to meet all the parents that you have connected and bonded with over the summer ( if you joined your class page). It is such a different day of emotions from R Day, as I understand it, as we weren't at R Day. Your cadet will be released after the Acceptance Parade on Saturday morning and will have to be back by Taps Sunday morning. They will be released again Sunday morning and will have recall Sunday night. Most will want to be back Sunday late afternoon to get their rooms in order with all the stuff they likely just had you take them shipping for :) as well as already have homework assignments.
Grant Turn around begins to look like a Best Buy parking lot on Black Friday.

Don't be fooled by the report times... That line gets long very fast. We were in line by 6am and we at the bottom of the stair about 200 ahead of us. When we got out 90 mins later the line was up the stairs up to the sidewalk across from the Plain (A very long way). Just because the report time is given expect to wait.

Wow! Already!

I'm glad my dad decided to buy that package. I thought it was kinda silly but I guess it turns out it was pretty practical.

Does it normally fill up this fast???

There are 2 IHG Army hotels on or near post. I am not sure if they are renting for the time period yet. We stayed in Newburgh the night before R Day and it was pleasant stay. Newburgh has a 4th of July festival and there are fireworks over the Hudson. Not sure what day this year.

If anyone can make it back to USMA for the 4th of July concert at Trophy Point - it was worthwhile. The new cadets are the guests of honor and it was amazing! I tried to upload a video from it but it’s too big. We didn’t stalk our son but found him in the crowd from afar by chance. He will be most likely at CFT2 during the 4th this year but we would love to make it back to the concert. Truly breathtaking. It is also shown live but being there was a treasure.

@GoArmy2022 Tell your parents to consider the Thayer for A-Day, PPW, and Graduation. It is a pleasure to be inside of the gate for all occasions, especially graduation week. This is true even if you are a military ID card holder. There is no 'fastlane' on big event days.

Also, being at the Thayer means that the cadet (Future You) can walk over to meet them for drinks and dinner overlooking the Hudson at the Zulu Lounge if you have down time during Grad Week or PPW or Ring Weekend. The price is high--but you pay for the ease and proximity. For graduation the Thayer will say it is 'no return' but if something happens along the way, you will either get refunded or you can find someone on the West Point Moms (or Dads) page or off the waiting list who will gladly take those rooms. I booked three rooms at the Thayer at 0900 on R-Day in 2012 standing with a bunch of dad's trying to make the same call at the same time on the patio of Ike (In those days, 0900 on R-Day was the first moment reservations.) It seemed like a lot of money upfront--but I was so happy 47 months later to have valet parking and a shuttle for my handicapped mama from the door of the Thayer to the Michie Stadium.

I did not do the Thayer for R-Day with the Baby--because it required booking two nights and I felt like I only needed one. I could have used the night of R-Day.
You all made the right choice for your R-Day. You should get there early--and you have to eat breakfast even though your stomach will be in knots--and then it is hot all day and a lot of standing (for the parents, too).

Thanks! My dad actually bought the package for R-day, A-day, PPW, and my graduation!

I’m really looking forward to everything (especially just being future me), but all of that will come with time!

I am so fortunate to have such a supportive family!

Do we need to stay the night of the 2nd? Are there activities all day or on the 3rd?

There is the oath ceremony later in the day on R-Day. You will not get off post until 7 or 8 that day.
