Would it be better to have a pocket sized one to bring in the field or a large regular sized one that is easy to read? I was leaning towards a regular sized handbook in order to study at home and take notes in my water proof notepad which then I would bring to the field. Thoughts?

Download the pdf and print the pages that cover the tactical tasks you do in lab. Your instructors can help you. It winds up being about 30 pages that can be printed in a pamphlet and is easy to carry and reference. Ms3s are issued Ranger Handbooks.

Laminating key pages that you can write on/wipe off with map markers helps out in the field as well like the OPORD format for hasty briefs
