Rated vs non Rated

Is it true the commissioned age limit is 28 for Rated, and 31 (35) for non rated? My son is late getting into the game and will be 28 this year. 3 yrs ago, he took the ASVAB and scored a 90. He and the Sargent decided he go for navigator. However, is he now too old after commission to take a rated position?. He is now a sophomore in college FT and plans to sign up for ROTC this fall.

He should just start the program first. But as far as the age factor. Rated (Pilot, Combat Systems Officer, Air Battle Manager and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Pilot)—commissioned before reaching the age of 29
Tech, nontech and nonrated—commissioned by age 30 (waiverable up to age 35).

In order to even be classified as rated or non rated he must take the AFOQT. You must pass the AFOQT with the minimums in Verbal(15) Quantitative(10) and in order to be rated you need a Pilot & Nav minimum score of 25 and the scores must be a combine 50. Once he does that he will know whether or not he qualifies. If he goes the 250 route (which I encourage) he will go to field training next summer as long as he passes the AFOQT. The following January he will go up for the rated selection boards. The results usually drop in February.
 
Thank you so much for your reply. Just to clarify, exactly what is the 250 route? Is that the combined Pilot/Nav route scores after AFOQT? Can he start AFROTC program now, or does he have to wait until the Fall Semester begins?
Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure he goes the correct route in a timely fashion.

I don't mind answering your questions. So when you start ROTC people start off as GMC (General Military Course cadet) these are referred to as AS100/200/250/500. Once you graduate field training you join the POC (Professional Officer Course) these are referred to as AS 300/400/700s. So normally a college freshman will come in as a AS100 which means they are on the 4-5 year graduation track. AS250 is usually someone who is close to graduating so a sophomore possibly a junior who's extending. In order to finish AFROTC one must do a minimum of 3 years so one as a GMC and 2 as a POC. That's the short version.

No he cannot start ROTC now he can go in and talk to their recruiting officer at the schools AFROTC Detachment. As far as the AFOQT no the combined Pilot and Nav score must be at least 50. So say you get a 50 pilot and a 20 Nav combine you have 70 but can only go up for RPA, Pilot & ABM. But if it was reversed you'd only be able to go up for Nav & ABM. I'm currently an AS400.
 
Thank you. After reading your initial reply, I found an old email with orientation schedules for that year. It linked me to the current application and orientation which takes place in August.

Like Zero said, age limits are waiverable. Just make sure the cadre have a reason to fight for you and always be ready to go with your plan B.
