Does anyone know of any former midshipman being readmitted? Also, what is the admissions board looking to see to readmit a former Midshipman? I was able to voluntarily resign due to academic deficiencies.

It happens all the time. Unfortunately, from your intro below, you have been out for a year and a half. Under a year, you do not need to reapply or get another nomination, just clear the Admissions Dept, take the CFA, and get a new DodMERB physical. Now you will have to go through the entire process. However, I would first call Admissions and talk to them.

USNA69- Thank you for your response and input. I have spoken to Admissions and I do not have to go through the entire process again. Do you have any insight on what is the determining factor when deciding to readmit a former Midshipman?

Admissions does not publish these requirements and I have no personal experience in the matter. I would imagine that you would be able to ascertain somewhat from their requirements as to what they want. I would guess they would want to see physically fitness and a personal growth during your absence. Most certainly, they would want to see proof of correction of your academic deficency and a challenging course load, maybe even attuned to the plebe year curriculum. To have left and pursued a similiar curriculum would indicate perserverence while a pursuit of something else may indicate a spur-of-the-moment decision to return. You are in a very unique situation and your package will be handled on the same basis. Probably your previous midshipman record and evaluations will be examined closely.

I had a NAPS classmate who, after beginning Plebe Year with us, dropped out. Two years later, while I was a 2/C, I was quite shocked to see her chop by as a Plebe. Talk about time warp!

Yep. It happens.

Good luck! :thumb:

Had a company classmate who was a real loser. Upperclass, deservidely so, ran him out. He came back my 2nd class year and my classmates ran him out the second time.

Sheesh. Run out by your upperclassmen AND your classmates.

He should run for Congress. Sounds over-qualified for that.

C_Odonnell,

I feel compelled to ask you a question that you WILL run across should you decide to do this. Why do you now feel you CAN get through USNA if before you resigned due to grades?

Has your time in a regular college polished your study skills? Have you been managing a workload similar to a USNA Plebe, and therefore become better at time management?

Let's face it. You already know the ins and outs of the application process (far better than I do, for that matter, as my experience is 17 years old, not just 2 or 3), so there's little I can offer in that regard. But I am curious to understand your thought process going into Lap 2. It WILL come up, and it WILL be a critical factor in your reapplication.

Either way, if you really want to do USNA and finish, then I say go for it.

Zaphod- Since leaving the Academy I have constantly analyzed my mistakes and missteps while at the Academy. My attitude concerning academics was entirely wrong. I thought I could get by like I did in high school without putting in the effort needed. Also, I did not seek help when I found myself getting into trouble grade wise. I allowed myself to fail. Honestly, I did not have the never quit attitude needed to succeed. I had placed all my time, thoughts, and energy into getting accepted to the Academy and did not actually think about what it takes to succeed there. There is no one else to blame but myself for failing. However, I did have some bad breaks. I only took pre-calculus in high school and somehow managed to be in the advanced calculus class that even people who had taken AP calculus did not get placed in. Also, I asked that I be allowed to retake Chemistry I because I did not feel I had the proper base to move onto Chem II. I was denied and was buried in Chem II. I also had poor time management. I spent way too much time with my military duties as Plebe Company Commander than with my academics.

Admiration for your 'guts' c_odonnell. The things you've learned from the past may be the very things that take you far. Best of luck in all you do.

Kid, you're going places. It's good to see you are looking in the mirror instead of pointing fingers.

I think the answers you gave above, and the underlying attitude, will be well received. No one is perfect, and it takes a serious pair of balls to look back at your performance and call a spade a spade.

I say go for it. You have learned the pitfalls and now are better prepared for them. Keep your current grades and activities up, stay focused, and when they ask the question I did, answer them as you did: with the truth.

I suspect you'll be wearing Navy Blue again soon. :thumb:

I appreciate the support guys. I am going to roll the dice and see what happens. If it doesnt work out, I am going to roll the dice next year.

Should this be of help to anyone in the future, the USNA website sort of answers the questions under FAQ. It is in reference to mormon mission trips but it says that those in good academic standing are usually re-admitted. I would assume the same would be true for anyone wishing to return, so long as you were a reasonable midshipmen you would be granted re-admission.
