I am a college reapplicant improving many aspects of my previous application, however I have one concern, my college grades. I’m currently taking Calculus, English, 2 engineering courses, and chemistry. I am pretty confident that I will be able to get an A in all those classes except chemistry. I didn’t do so hot on my first test and I don’t think I’ll be able to get in the A range, but I do think I’ll be able to stay in the low B, High C range. Will this have a huge impact on my application? I know they will still look at my high school grades and I had a 3.97 goals (recalculated), but still that’s my only concern.

This question comes up almost every week. The guidance form admissions is to take a similar classes as a freshman and do well. Contrary to popular culture, most college freshman in STEM majors do not get a 4.0 in the first semester of college. It is also a sliding scale with may variables. All As and Bs demonstrate a successful semester. If you were to get a C in Chemistry with everything else above the 3.0 number, it would not be an immediate disqualifier but may cause other parts of your application to get a little more scrutiny. It is also still a competition. While a 3.0 is probably not disqualifying, you could easily be beat out by others with a 3.5.

The best way for a college to determine whether you can excel in college-level work is to look at your college performance. So that’s exactly how USAFA will consider your freshman grades. High school stuff is good, but they now have a better measure for predicting your ability to handle the USAFA curriculum. So just do your best. Prioritize your time and focus your efforts. That’s all you can do.
