Hello,
Had an LOA with a medical waiver needed. Got that denied, I am in the process of trying to appeal it. If I don't get the appeal this year in time, I plan to try again for next year to USNA. Do I have to go through all the steps again, or would my application and LOA still be good?
Please advise, thank you

teddy, i know your son must be very sad about getting accepted and then getting DQ'ed. i asked my uncle about his case yesterday (my uncle is a corneal surgeon in PA) when i was consulting with him about my own vision (i'll have to get PRK myself to select aviation) and he said that your son should definitely see a opthamologist that specializes in corneal surgery to get a professional opinion about whether or not laser correction could help him get within the requirement. my uncles says he can imagine many cases where it could. if your son applies next year, just be sure to see the doctor early enough to make the 6 month requirement.

VMINROTChopeful,

The part everyone seems to overlook when it comes to having PRK/LASIK done, is your vision must meet standards prior to having the surgery (if you are looking to enter an academy/ROTC). So in teddy's case getting PRK/LASIK done would not help much in his case.

Also with the vision that teddy has reported, I really do not believe that even with surgery he would be able to correct to 20/20.

I'm not flaming here, just making sure that anyone who may read this thread understands that each applicant is an individual, and what works/worked for one may not nessesarily work for another. With medicine you can not put each individual into a nice little circle and expect it to fit into the hole provided.

Teddy, to answer your question, your son will have to re-apply next year. The fact that he received an LOA this year, and if he is able to maintain his GPA at college this year, I can see no reason why he would not be able to receive an LOA next year. I think the application process may even be a little shorter, but the best answer would come from the admissions office.
