Thank you to everyone who visits/responds to this thread. My question comes from the standpoint of a College Programmer, not on contract, who is currently awaiting for the USNA to inform me of whether or not I have received an appointment to the Academy after my second time applying. I will not be contracted through at least the beginning of next year to the best of my knowledge. Would it be wise to apply one more time to the Academy as a Third Class Midshipman next year, with the stipulation that I would still be not on scholarship. It is not a guarantee that I would contract next year, so if I wanted to continue pursuing a Naval career as an officer, would it make more sense to eat the money and commission through OCS, or keep trying at Annapolis and hope that my tenacity would pay off. Has there ever been a person who was in NROTC for two years who switched to USNA? Again thank you for your time.

Very respectfully,

NavyOption451.

People get accepted on a second re-app. You have to decide if it's worth it for you. If you don't get a scholarship next year and decide not to re-apply there is always a chance for advanced standing. If you don't achieve advanced standing then you need to fall back on OCS. I would make all that my plan B if you do re-apply.

if i understand the OP, you are currently a college freshman, 4th class College Programmer at NROTC? if so, why do you assume you won't be contracted next year? did you not apply for a sideload 3 yr scholarship?

if you don't get the 3 yr scholarship, there is another chance next year to get the 2 yr sideload as a college junior, and then a change to contract (Advanced Standing) for senior year, though i'm not sure about the details on timing for advanced standing.

generally speaking, if you're not competitive for a sideload scholarship you are likely not competitive for USNA

I know I didnt pick up this year. I have been struggling with grades yes, but I am not on academic probation or anything so I could be a good candidate for the three year or sideload. However, my question is whether a 3rd Class midshipman applying to USNA would be dismissed outright. I assume that the answer would be yes if they were on scholarship.

Not necessarily true since the competition for one is national and the other is, at least initially, is

Plenty of MIDN on scholarship get appointments. No payback required.

Just about a month ago we had a guy receive his appointment to USMA as a 1/C cadet(Thats 5 cycles of admissions!!). You can do it.

Check out this thread. PM the OP for advice when you have enough messages

I was accepted on my second application. I say go for it. I second calling admissions in order to identify what areas you need to improve on. This summer try and seek out additional training opportunities, internships, volunteer opportunities that will further and diversify your growing breadth of life experience. Admitting applicants from active duty and college is attractive because of your life experience that you bring with you. Reflect and focus on that and why it makes you a more well rounded and mature person.

A year in college and 2 years in the Navy gave me time to grow and learn who I was as a man. I learned a lot about myself and focused on how those experiences helped me become Someone who would not only excel, but help my classmates grow and excel alongside me. If Annapolis is where you want to be, make it happen.

In my 28 years here, I’ve seen many “multiple” applicant applications be successful. Each suucessive time, your resume should improve with the additional maturity, experience, and demonstrated academic performance 😁

NavyOption,

I applied three times before getting in. I don’t regret it at all. If you’ve done the app twice already You are already well practiced so it doesn’t really take that much effort in the long run to fill it out. I am a huge advocate of keeping all doors open, if you apply and get the scholarship great you have two options. If you dont get the scholarship and decided to not apply then there’s no chance you could’ve gotten in. So I’d say keep up the application and then see what you want to do after the answers come in from big Navy. For some just finishing out two years and going to ocs is a good choice, for me I realistically only would’ve been going subs if I hadn’t gone academy (great route but I enjoy flying through air better than water thanks to free PRK). But you will want to have the choices open when it’s time to make them.

I say go for everything to give yourself the most shots, to know that you haven’t stopped short of trying for something if it’s really your goal.

Punting to OCS has its own risks. OCS is highly competitive in its own way, and serves as the adjustment valve for pre-comm programs. In any given cycle, OCS intake will vary with USNA, NROTC and other pre-comm program outputs. Since the warfare specialty is known going in, and the age limit is higher, the Navy can shop the applicant pool for exactly the candidates it wants to meet the needs of the Navy. You can be a phenomenal candidate, but not be what the Navy needs this year.
