What is the chance of receiving another appointment? Has anyone been successful the second time around??

What do you mean “not accepting”? Were you offered and appointment and then turned it down? If this is the case, why wouldn’t you just accept it in the first place? If you mean that you were not offered and appointment the first go, then yes. Many people re apply and receive appointments the second, and even third try.

Yes, I mean offered an appointment and then turned it down.

I think it’s really about how strong your package is, what do your essays say and what did you say in your interview. I have a feeling the essays and interview would way heavier than the normal candidate. I had classmates leave USNA and reapply. I think in some ways it’s similar. Why did you turn it down? Did you seek out opportunities? What have you done since then? What did you learn? Why now?

+1 to @NavyHoops

The competition counter zeroes out and starts again. Much will depend on what you bring to the table after another cycle. Did you use that year well? Are you articulate about why you turned it down and how your thinking has changed?

One of the mids in my Batt when I was on USNA staff went home voluntarily during Plebe Summer. This person smacked their (being gender neutral here) forehead, worked hard, showed new maturity and desire, got in again. Broke leg second week of PS, was sent home to recover. Worked hard again at local college, including physical therapy, re-applied, got in. Stayed, excelled, captained a team, went on to med school.

One of our sponsor mids was a recruited athlete, turned offer down. Smacked forehead, worked hard, showed personal growth, got in again, walked onto team, excelled and is currently deployed.

If you want it, figure out how to go after it again.

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, I am (truthfully) not asking for myself and because of this, I don't want to go into too much detail about the circumstances. I had heard that USAFA admissions will not consider your (re)application, basically dismisses it out of hand, if you did not accept a previous appointment. I was wondering if anyone knows this to be true.

@sunnydays That isn't true. I myself was appointed to USAFA '21 then went to civilian college and decided it wasn't for me and now I'm back in the Class of '23. Don't regret my decision in the slightest and love life here at the Academy. Apply again if USAFA is where you think you want to be!

There can be many reasons for turning down an appointment, some good and some bad. Some good reasons: change of heart (x2), some life altering change (family diagnosed with something, etc), truly believing that you are not yet prepared for the academy (emotionally, mentally, physically), and others that I don't know about.

The wrong reason: "I got in this year, so I can get in next year and have an advantage over other cadets by doing a year of college."

Just make sure that the person you are asking for is making decisions for the right reasons, and not the wrong ones. Admissions most likely will be able to see the difference.
