Hey y'all!
I know there is a sticky thread with general information about reapplying to USNA, but please bear with me I'm trying to gather all the information that I can!
A little bit about me: I am at a four-year university in Texas. I play waterpolo for them, have pretty good grades, participate in volunteering with my local church, am an active member with a leadership role in my fraternity, work two jobs, and am in the business school. I'm not in ROTC or anything military related (no NROTC at my school).
Prior Application: I received a congressional nom. but was turned down. My CFA and standardized test scores were good, and was all clear with DoDMERB. My BGO was awesome but all he could tell me was that it was a pretty competitive year and I should re-apply.
My Question: I was wondering in general if y'all have any recommendations as a re-applicant! I am slightly concerned with the fact that I am not doing anything military related and that I am not in a STEM major. Do you guys have anything I should focus on specific to the fact that I have college experience? I am meeting with my BGO next week and will be asking him similar questions.

Thanks!

High grades in STEM courses are the most important thing for an applicant already in college. If you want to get into USNA you should be taking calculus, chemistry, and physics as doing well in them will demonstrate your ability to handle USNA's curriculum.

One of the more important elements is to demonstrate you have read and are following USNA’s guidance to re-applicants for course load. You should be prepared to brief your BGO on your nom plan, academic plan, physical fitness plan, activities you plan to get involved in to show continued personal growth. If there’s no NROTC there or at a cross-town school, be sure and explain that. Be positive and show commitment.

I don't recall whether its in the sticky, but I tell my Reapplicant candidates to wait until you are a few months into your college career to write your essays, do the BGO interview, etc. This may seem counter-intuitive, but the Admissions Board isn't going to look at your package until first semester grades are submitted. If you try to put your application together before going away to college, all you can do is resubmit the same old stuff that didn't work the first time. On the other hand, waiting gives you an opportunity to emphasize your new experience and bring something new to the table.

Agree about better wait after 1st college semester esp. since more mature perspective for essays. But this statement seems off: "all you can do is resubmit the same old stuff that didn't work the first time." It seems to assume applicant did little to nothing the last semester of their senior year of high school. I can't imagine many candidates sit on their fannies in the spring of their senior year, the ones I've met (including DS) seem to all be amazing go-getters and would def have things to add. More concerned about what DS will have to add from 1st semester college (beyond USNA type courses and NROTC, and maturity in essays). ????

> Certainly didn't mean to imply that any candidate did , would, or should slack off their Senior year, but most Candidates project what they expect to do the last semester of Senior years (e.g.,"expected to be Captain of the Baseball team," or even already selected...)., The truth is, for most, the last semester is really an extension of the previous 3 years, so nothing really "new". If a Candidate has something new, by all means include it., but the point is, for the most part its a continuation of the same old thing. Going to college is a whole new experience, there are alot of opportunities, and most kids learn alot about themselves pretty quickly. Since USNA is not even going to look at the application until first semester grades are in, there is no benefit to rushing the application process. If you are concerned that some will view the delay as a lack of diligence, motivation or excitement, contact your BGO early and tell him/her what your plan and reasoning. I would suspect that the BGO would be impressed by the approach.

Even though you are not a STEM major, take some STEM classes. Mirror the plebe schedule as best you can. Study hard and get the highest grades possible. You state you have pretty good grades, try to get great grades.
