I just received a nomination but my packet was incomplete at the deadline. Is the nomination good for next year? If not, could I deny the nomination so that somebody else could receive it?

Hey nate,

The nominations reset each year, so you will have to reapply again for congressional nominations. As far as denying the nomination, I don't know if someone else will be able to accept it at this point. For what its worth, USAFA and other military academies really like reapplicants.

Does it specifically say your application is closed? My application is listed as incomplete because I have not sent in college transcripts. Others have also yet to submit CFA scores and teacher recs. All the same, we are still in the running. I would double check with admissions just to see if you can finish whatever was left. Couldn't hurt to ask.

If you no longer have an interest in attending the AFA ( assume from your previous posts) I would contact your MOC who you received the nom from and notify them of this out of respect for their time and the possibility they could maybe offer it to another qualified candidate who may need it.

It does say its closed and I won't be considered this year. Do you think that contacting the academy counseling office would help, or is it too late?

You can try contacting the Academy, but it does not look good for you.

I will give you the direct answer as it relates to a young man I just worked with.

a. He did NOT have an application open by 31 DEC 11 (USAFA wasn't his goal, really)
b. He received a nomination from his MOC in January 2012.
c. USAFA would NOT go back and reopen the files as he had not applied for admission prior to the federal cutoff date.
d. NOTHING I could say/ask/almost beg did a thing; they said they were constrained by law.

I think you'll have to wait to re-apply if that's your goal.

I respect and agree with the AFA's decision. The only way I can see giving a pass would be an extreme issue, such as a parent's death if they passed the 12/31 date.

You hopefully will learn from your mistakes, and I would be prepared if the MOC does interviews to answer one question. I see you were a nom last yr. and you did not receive an appointment, what makes this yr different?

Hard to say, "Well, you see I really didn't get to compete because I never completed my file on time and the AFA closed it." I don't think you would expect them to give you another bite at the apple with that as an answer.

Best of luck.
