Received an LOA

Does that mean you got in? I thought cutoff was 2/1. The only thing my DS is missing is nomination but applications were just due. Wasn't sure if an LOA is part of the process. First time applying to a SA.

Not to worry - the posters above are following all the same timelines as your DS. They just happened to receive letters that say, essentially, we are saving a spot for you if you complete items X and Y satisfactorily. They are conditional offers of appointment, given for whatever reason the SA sees fit. They are not the norm.

Just keep moving forward, don’t look left or right.

Today I received an LOA from Merchant Marine Academy in the mail. I have never been happier. Now I just need to keep my grades up and secure a nomination. Very happy girl at the moment.
Congratulations northtexascj, and welcome. I am happy to answer any questions as the mom of a current female mid.

What company is your daughter in? I have done a lot of research and looking forward to reporting June 28th. Did your daughter do alot of conditioning before reporting?

She is in Band Company. Sections for Plebes are a mix from all the different companies so you get to know everyone. My DD hates running, but was in shape and had excellent core strength from being a dancer. Neither she nor my DS (a high school wrestler) thought INDOC was very physically demanding. But there were others (both guys and girls) who were literally crying at how hard it was. I think it is mental more than physical. If you are in reasonably good shape and have a positive attitude and a sense of humor you will be fine.

Thank you for the information and advice!

In my day, I was pretty fit from being a three season "athlete" in high school. Wasn't really beyond my ability physically, but the mental stuff was the toughest. . .not impossible, though.

Congratulations on your LOA, mszwed. Have you had your nomination interview(s) yet? I know the waiting is tough, but great job making it this far!

I received an LOA a few weeks ago as well! Unfortunately, I've heard nothing regarding nominations as of yet.

Good to see the LOA - have you prepared your battle plan in the case of no noms from elected officials in your District or no Senator nom? USMMA is unique in that you are not limited to the District in which you live, which you probably already know, but this might help other readers. If you haven’t prepared a list of contact numbers, researched other Districts, had everything ready to send and prepped your ask, that might fill the waiting time.

It's still early for noms. . . my DS received from both senators and our rep and the letters were dated December 5, 12, and 14. Congrats on the LOA!

Make sure your potential nominating sources that you have an LOA. It may give you an edge in receiving a nomination knowing that KP wants you.

My son's status changed from Nominations None to YES. Does this mean he has definitely received a nomination already? He has not received any other notification from the nominating congressman or academy. He wants to be sure before he cancels his remaining interviews. Thanks in advanced...I am excited to have just discovered this helpful site!

The general advice is to apply for as many nomination sources as possible. That gives the SA more flexibility. If your DS doesn’t beat out the others nommed by the same MOC to get the appointment(s) available, then if he had a Senator’s nom, he would still be in play.

USMMA is unique from the other SAs in terms of nom sources, see link.

Don’t leave any possible nom sources on the table. True, only one is needed for purposes of an appointment, but more noms give more chances for competitive review.

Of course, if your elected officials collaborate and have agreed no double or triple noms, a candidate can only receive one.

Congratulations to your son on earning a nom.

Thanks for the response! He has been on five interviews and still has three more to go. This will increase his chances, correct?

also... maybe a nom received would be a principal... don’t want to miss sny opportunities!!

Yes, you should continue on with the other interviews to increase his chances. The more nominations he has, the more flexibility the academy has to select which source they want to use for his nomination. Congratulations and good luck in the rest of the process.
