Received Appointment...Am Unsure

First - congrats on earning an appointment and congrats on having options. I was on the bubble and got in because someone higher on the list changed their mind. I speak for all of the bubble kids here that want to attend USAFA from the bottom of their soul - more than they want to breathe - if you are this unsure and already have a strong negative opinion about cadet life at USAFA... Please decline the appointment and let someone with a burning desire fill the slot.

You have multiple great options - go with the one that works best for you and that you believe you can be successful with. You did the right thing by attending Summer Sci and you got a taste of the campus and the experience.

Shiner is right on the money, as a parent of an AFROTC Scholarship winner my DS, I can tell you he is one of the many who covet that USAFA slot. If you know you will not be happy there take the scholarship offered and enjoy your college experience still the same end result. Just make the decision that is BEST for YOU. Good luck with your future endeavors and Gods many blessings upon you while you make that choice.

@neoloop

Take all the time you need to review all your opportunities, evaluate the tangible and intangible aspects, and make the decision that is right for you. Be sure you project ahead to your best guess at an older self, and evaluate from the “road not taken” perspective of potential regret. Own the decision and any consequences when you talk with your parents. Good officers come out of all commissioning programs. You should be all in for a SA and over the moon; if you are not, those feelings tend to fester.

Do not worry about “freeing up a slot.” You earned every opportunity you have, and the deadlines are set as they are for candidates to come to thoughtful decisions. The SAs target a range for every incoming class, not necessarily an exact number, and always offer more appointments than they expect to be accepted. They are savvy in estimating the yield rate, and appointments are still coming out, as we are just into March.

We are waiting our appointment and if or when it comes it will be be my son's decision to attend. Like you he has other great options and is already accepted to another top school.. To the end- I'll be putting him on a plane to visit the academy and he will make his own decision , form his own opinion. His decision that he will have to live with BUT not a catastrophic one....

Your eventual goal is Officer, Student is just a phase between here and there. Pick the path that makes your goal most likely. (Hint: your tone indicates more risk at the academy.)

Shiner is right on with his sentiments above. Question - when you were writing your essays to USAFA for your application, knowing the negative feelings you had regarding summer seminar coupled with the positive feelings you had about AFROTC, were you completely honest in your answers to the AFA essay questions in the application? The answer to this question will likely help you make the right decision. I had a roommate at USNA who was pushed by his father, who was a captain in the Navy, to attend USNA. He attended but was miserable for four years. If you have real doubts now based on spending a week at USAFA, follow your gut and not what your parents "think" is best for you. Good luck.
