DS was DQ'd by DoDMERB today with the following codes:

D155.70Myopia - refractive error greater than -8.00 diopters (spherical equivalent)Myopia - refractive error greater than -8.00 diopters (spherical equivalent)
D225.00History of any dislocation, subluxation or instability of the shoulderHistory of any dislocation, subluxation or instability of the shoulder
D271.40History of systemic allergic reaction to food or additivesHistory of systemic allergic reaction to food or additive

Question: Are any of these NOT "waiverable" for USMA and USNA?

DS has received congressional nominations for both SA's, so assuming he's competitive. Has passed his CFA too.

His shoulder required surgery for a torn labrum and is without any restrictions.
He's allergic to seafood, although not diagnosed by a physician.
During the DoDMET exam, he was told his eyes are healthy, just "weak" (poor vision). He wears contacts, so not sure if this code is considered correctable or not.

Any insight is appreciated. I don't want to set any false sense of hope, and definitely have plans B-Z in place.

It might be more effective to post this on the DODMERB Board, and present the question as whether anyone has had experience getting a waiver for these conditions. No one here really knows what the parameters of waivers are, but (as an exception to my normal comment that one data point doesn't make a rule.. ), but anecdotal stories may answer the question if something is "waiverable" . If something has been waived, it can be waived--this does not necessarily that it will be waived in particular case , there are way to many variable in the waiver equation to even speculate.

My DS has 225.0 for labral surgery and we sent waiver board letter today from surgeon saying he was released without restriction. It should satisfy that one. He also has some hearing loss in 1 ear that was DQ'd. We followed up with ENT, and waiver review board wants us to consult with audiologist with ENT notes. That is scheduled for Wednesday. We will wait and see.
Good luck with your waivers!

Sorry to hear about your DQ. If those are waiverable, prepare for the road ahead. It is bumpy as hell.

My DS received D225 last year and was DQ without a waiver. He had sen/congr nominations, a very high GPA and SAT/ACT scores and letters from his doctor. And millions of other supportive documents/achievements. He was hoping for AFA, not USMA or USNA.
Good luck! I hope your son receives all the waivers he needs!!!

My daughter was measured at over -8 and was granted a medical waiver for Air Force ROTC (June 2020). The key was the eye exam itself. The concern is the possibility of a detached retina. Here is an example of the comments we received from two different eye doctors.

Summary of DOD-contracted Dilated Fundoscopic Exam with Dr. X (26 May 20)
- OD and OS Vitreous: Clear without hemorrhage, cells, or pigment.
- OD and OS Vessels: Normal contour, caliber without neovascularization.
- OD and OS Macula: Normal contour without heme, edema, drusen, or exudate.
- OD and OS Periphery: Normal appearance without retinal tears, breaks, holes, or mass.

Summary of Dilated Fundoscopic Exam with Family Eye Doctor, Dr. Y (14 May 20)
- Optic nerves, maculae, and retinal vasculature all revealed optimal ocular health.
- Retinal peripheral exam revealed no ocular pathology.
- There are no hemes, exudate, scars, opacities, or retinal degeneration.
- Of specific interest in this case, no thinning or lattice degeneration of the retina 360 (OD or OS).

Although we had great results from both exams, it important to note that the needs of each Service shift from year-to-year.

Best wishes during the process. It is long and difficult but most definitely worth the effort.
