Recognition 2018

Thanks! We can wear backpacks all the time. We can wear civies and go off base(in civies) with unlimited passes. We're no longer at attention except when everyone is. We can talk at all times pretty much. We don't have to study for k-tests, greet by cadet rank, name, and job, or walk on the right side of the hall. We can visit all of our friends in other squads and be in our rooms with doors closed after lunch. We can take naps when we don't have class. We don't have to have our rooms perfect just clean and organized. We don't have required items such as 341's, contrails, and staff lists. We do not have to use only back stairwells and can use elevators(as opposed to going back to squad after leg day and going to 6th floor by stairs). We don't have to wear UOD to optional meals(just PT gear)

Wait...What? You have unlimited passes as a recognized 4 deg? We didn't get unlimited passes until we were firsties!

Last spring they reworked the pass system, basically it looks like this now:
4-digs: about what you'd expect before recognition, basically unlimited now.
3-digs: Can leave any weekday as long as back before ACQ, unlimited otherwise
2-digs: Can leave any weekday as long as back before taps, unlimited otherwise
firsties can generally stay out overnight on school nights as long as they show to the CQ early the next morning.

I might have missed something but this is the general idea.

Woah! I thought USAFA was way more restrictive about time off than that!
What do you mean by "about what you'd expect before recognition"? After Basic but before Recognition, can we leave on weekends, sometimes, rarely, or never....?

WOW!! That's a major rework from back in my day! We couldn't even go off base on week nights until we were firsties, and didn't get "brevet" (the authorization to stay off base over night on weeknights) until just before graduation. The class before us was never authorized brevet.

Bailey, I believe you are given a limited number of day passes and over night passes each semester as a doolie. You also have the opportunity to earn more based on football game wins, and making com/dean/supts lists

I mean, just because sign out logs might be open doesn't mean that you can leave whenever. There's plenty of night briefings, lectures, homework, etc that USAFA does a pretty good job keeping you around. I know I don't leave nearly as much as I thought I would when I was a freshman. Before recognition you'll have a really limited number of passes and whether or not you can leave is up to your squadron on a weekly basis. It really just depends on your squadron whether or not you can leave on the weekends (meaning Friday/Saturdays. Sunday sponsor passes work a little differently.)

The other thing to keep in mind is silver weekends. Sometimes sign out logs aren't open on Fridays before a training day, and then you'll probably be busy here until between 12-5 on Saturday afternoon. So for example, we have 3 silver weekends in a row coming up soon. So even with all the class privileges, the vast majority of the wing will be around most of the weekend.

Also, getting yourself Dean's List is a good deal. It gives you additional privileges (for example, 3-digs get to stay out until taps one weekday a month while they're on the list-good for going to concerts or things like that.)

Thanks for the explanation! I'm not surprise that life as a cadet keeps everyone pretty busy!

My DD spoke to several kids who were thinking about applying to SA from the local HS. They way she explained it:

You are given a "poop" sandwich. At all the SAs except USAFA, they cut that sandwich into quarters and serve it each year. At USAFA, you get the whole sandwich the first year. Haha! But that means that USAFA is less restrictive the last 3 years. I believe this refers mostly to the leave policy.

If you can get yourself on a competitive club sport as my DS did, you can leave with the team for meets, events, etc. He was out practically every weekend during his season and was great for him as aC4C.

This is kind of a side note but sort of relates! One of my friends that goes to USAFA said to definitely get involved with a club sport or traveling sport, as it gives you opportunity to experience different scenery and clear your head, as well as appreciate USAFA more. She said that going to her sponsor's home every weekend also allowed her some time to get away, and she was ready to get back to it come Sunday evening. I guess it's kind of like living at home all that time before your college years, when you don't appreciate your parents as much (speaking for myself), and then when you go off, you look forward to the days you can return home!

Definitely get involved in clubs/sports! Remember that there are traveling non-sport clubs as well. The Chorale is an example of a "Mission Support" group that travels. In the past, they've sung in the Superbowl and other professional sporting events, Miss America Contest and just this year, at the Japanese Consulate for the Emperor's birthday.

No fair! :)

You were there, "Back when it was hard!" :thumb:

Don't forget D&B ! Traveling with the football team to the games on military aircraft is something my DS loves! He's been to Vegas with the basketball team two of three years, ski trip to Aspen, played at a Bronco game (watched the game from a restaurant across the street tho...ha ha).

What's D&B? It's probably really obvious
