Do I need a recommendation from an ALO to be competitive for summer seminar? How do I get one?

Thanks.

csBlaZe,

if you've completed your USAFA SLS application (it's open now)... then your ALO will contact you... and an interview will be conducted (either in-person or by phone... in person is best if your assertive, bright, and outgoing)====
F.Y.I you'll need to intellegent on national security policies (not to deep), current events, AF weapon systems, your future as an Air Force officer, your influences, your goals, your current activites, leadership, etc.

after which, (in the near future) your ALO will write an EVALUATION about you...

in addition, this is a vital part of your SLS package... get smart, be honest, BE YOURSELF, don't be a know-it-all or a "sally talks alot"... COOL and CALM.

good luck and best wishes !

AF weapons systems? What? Neither my SS interview, regular USAFA interview, nor my nom interview touched on AF weapons systems at all, and none of my other candidate/appointee friends mentioned anything about this either... Do NOT worry about that, csBlaze. Don't worry about national security policies either, especially for a SS interview. This comes from my experience and the experiences of others that I am familiar with, your mileage may vary.

I agree Zachogden, a bit strange theyd question about AF weapons systems, iam sure you wont need that knowledge until youre actually in the AF. Your ALO interview is a time for you to shine in every aspect you possibly can for your review. It will be your first interview taste because nom interviews are nasty...:shake:

csBlaZe,

airforce16 is right your ALO interview is an opportunity for you to shine !

in addition, airforce16 and zachogden have a valid viewpoints about not being concerned about knowing AF weapon systems... but be cautious... their opinions are due only to personal experiences...(?) as is mine.

IMO it is very much in your best interest to get smart on the basics (ie. new jets, bombers, etc.).... current events.... iraq, afgan., iran, china (leaders, military, interests, etc.).... the future

the last thing you want is for you ALO to ask you a question and you have no related response.

your interview can be from 30mins to 1 hour (up to the ALO) so there won't be alot of time for you to "shoot the breeze" and tell all you know.

and... the questions, the time, and the tone of the interview it totally dependant on how through (how good a job) your ALO wants to be.

again... I cannnot stress enough how important it is to smile, be assertive, positive, COOL, and CALM, and friendly to you ALO... just be yourself and whatever you do...DO NOT - KISS ASS.

haha well put bud, and he clarified a valid point. at my second senator interview i felt i did much better at even though i felt both went very well. they asked me to identify a man in a photo who was General Patreus of the Army. i had no idea and told them that i did not know who it was even though they took notes at the fact there was a date in the corner and i attempted to use it to my advantage??? anywho i didnt get his nomination but instead the other senator's. be on your toes and quick minded, a personal goal of mine going in was to eliminate all down time, meaning i didnt want there to be any silence while i thought. i thought of the best possible answer i could, began my answer and worked from there...

Good luck to you bud...

The strangest question asked at any of my interviews was "What is the best book you've read in the last year?" I think I may have temporarily had a "deer in the headlights" look, but I had a good answer.

Interviews are to get a feel for the person. Chances are they will surprise you with something. Don't worry too much. If you are the "right kind" of person for an academy, they will probably see that.

Interestingly enough, my MOC nom interview featured a similar question: "Tell us about 3 books you've read recently outside of school." I don't do much book reading outside of school (unless programming references count) because I'm so loaded with school reading, so I talked about the last book I could remember reading at length... did I mention I read that book in 7th grade? Luckily it was about something "mature" - immigration. Mexifornia, by Victor Davis Henson (?) actually.
