recruited Athletes waiting on admissions decision?

Hi I’m new here my son just received a denial and he received a letter he was a recruited athlete end of last summer . So does that mean reapply next year ?
Did he just receive a letter of interest or did he actually meet with coaching staff and did they pledge their support to his application?

USCGA doesn't send out letters announcing that someone is a recruited athlete. Ask the coach what he thinks.

You can be a recruited athlete and still be denied. I believe that only about a third of recruited athletes actually secure a place at the academy. It certainly increases your chance of acceptance but doesn't guarantee one.

he received an email last August timeframe that he was a recruited athelete from the coach. Last night he signed in and was denied . no waitlist , no hold etc. He said last week if he doesnt get in he will attend a regular college on a recruited scholarship and reapply next year. Just not sure what he right thing to do is. He is also on HOld for USMMA and was about half way up the hold list from what our person indicated indirectly and USAFA we called and its a possibilty he could get Prep school. However, his first choice is USCGA. Wondering to advise him to wait or hope for USMMA or try prep at USAFA if he is granted any of these. Thanks for advice!

Has he had any contact with the coach since last august? I'd be very curious to see what that email says. Again - first point of contact should be the coach.

Did he have noms for all three? Also wonder about interactions with Coach beyond August. Is he recruited for USMMA and USAFA as well? Trying to put pieces together in my mind for understanding.

he has 2 nominations for USMMA hes met with the from usmma coach but not officially listed as recruited but her had an overnight with the team in January. USAFA he is not a recruited athlete and was told he could try out as a walk on. Coach said some of his better players were walk ons over the years. Not sure if he just said that to make him feel better. ( USAFA had a change in coaching staff head coach was an assistant before )when we visited and my son was a late bloomer so when they were recruiting their D1 he was still small . We visited the AFA in december 2017 and all coaching stafff was not there due to a hazing problem. He has also received 1 nomination to USAFA . I was indirectly told in January he was half way up the holds list for USMMA and today was told he possibly may get prep school for USAFA nothing is for sure on either end. My son is hoping for USMMA bec he could still commision into CG but hate to see him deny USAFA prep if he is offered it and nothing else. He wants to play his sport and study engineering whether its Mechanical or Marine Engineering. Thanks for any advice. Hate the waiting

Would he be able to get out of his “regular college” scholarship should he decide to reapply?

A strong desire to serve must be present. If his main interest is his sport, maybe regular college scholarship would be the best route. Make sure serving his country is his first desire. Not playing his sport. A SA is unlike any other sports ‘scholarship’ Bc an athlete can walk away from their sport, and many do. The demands of academics, company obligations, athletics among other things can be overwhelming at best and some cannot handle all those competing demands. Would he be happy without his sport? Another thing that can happen is he could get cut from the team. Would he still enjoy his SA? Still want to serve (a minimum of 5 yrs btw)?

Assuming his first desire is actually attending a SA and serving, personally I would not bet on an unknown. So much could change. And absolutely NO guarantee he would even be looked at for his sport again. It happens all the time, we read stories every year about kids banking on being recruited, and it doesn’t come to fruition (search the threads for ‘recruited athlete’). You are number 1 until a new number 1 comes along. Also SA coaches cannot guarantee getting you in. They have a couple ‘blue chips’ but recruited still have to meet SA requirements of academics, medical and physical. I would advise a sure thing, as long as he has really thought about serving. Post academy.

Being blunt, if he isn’t recruited USAFA for his sport, and communication with coach at USCGA stopped, he probably isn’t looking at true interest in his sport. And he needs to obtain an appointment on his own. If he truly wants an academy, and is passionate about that, I would advise taking one that’s for sure vs waiting and reapplying. Every year AMAZING candidates have to be turned away. Read the “waiting” threads to see what the resumes of his competition look like. It’s very humbling.

Editing to add: the number of nominations does not matter. It doesn’t indicate competitiveness for an appointment.

FYI Uscg doesn’t accept nominations from anyone to receive an appt

I agree that if going to SA is your son’s number one priority, then there is a path to get there without losing sight of that goal. We were given the path to take by the Dean of Admissions at the USCGA. Here it is direct appointment, sponsored prep school, or Marion Military Institute (unsponsored). As soon as we were notified from the USCGA EA (first choice) that our DD was denied(no offer of any kind) we contacted MMI and applied. With to date a decision still pending from the USMMA our DS has had the peace of mind to know that he has in place a plan that will ultimately lead to his goal. The staff at MMI is great and they are very confident in their almost 200 year process! Our thoughts were that if the SA was our son’s goal, then we wanted him to be able to make himself a candidate. Why pay for a year, at a four year university that would not prepare him for SA. As it turned out, our DS was awarded through scholarships almost full tuition unsponsored . Then Friday March 28, our son was contacted by the USCGA that they would like to offer sponsorship to prep school! So, if this is your DS or DD’s desire to be in the SAs , then before all the chips are down get set up to get there! It will not hurt your chances at this point , and it’s a great feeling to know you have a plan for your DS , or DD that gets them to their goal. MMI’s Service Academy Program feeds all five academies.

I’m actually a USNA mom. DS is just finishing up his first year. I chimed in about ‘recruited athlete’ as DS was one and we have been through it. I don’t know anything at all about self prep sports. Someone will chime in.

Will DS accept USMMA if appointed? I have a good friends son attending this year!

Overall, make sure your DS is truly interested in serving. Sometimes I think kids and parents get starry-eyed about continuing their sport at the collegiate level. There is soooooo much hoopla surrounding that in HS. BUT once the student moves on beyond HS.....all that goes away. Sometimes the sport is more than the student can with all the demands competing for their time. And they also may have to sacrifice leave for their sport, which can be hard emotionally. Another thing they can face is being used to being the star on the HS team. Yet perhaps on the ‘bench’ on the collegiate team. So an athlete may actually decide to not compete. It’s prudent to really be honest about the motives behind playing sports for a SA.

NOT saying that is your situation. At all. I
preach it to all who mention ‘recruited athletes’.

Congrats again!

Question....so your son was denied for early action? then was contacted in March and offered a CGAS appointment? I didn't know that would happen. Do you think it was because you were looking at a self-prep option? I actually looked at MMI but they do not offer my son's sport.
