Hi I was just wondering what exactly is the recruitment process like for the Coast Guard Academy? The coaches seem really interested in me, and gave amazing advice for applying to the Academy. I thought that I was kind of being recruited but recently I have seen that someone committed to the team. They took a picture in the uniform and everything. If I have not been asked to commit and have not taken a picture in the uniform...does that mean that I am not really being recruited?

If the coaches are interested in having you on the team, they will probably write something about why they need you on the team and give it to the admissions board. I don't think you have to officially commit for this to happen. What sport is it?

Are you male or female, and which sport are you talking about? The experience will be different for each sport, but if other kids are committing to that team, and all the coach has done is give you advice on applying, then it is unlikely that you are a recruit. That doesn't mean they wouldn't be happy to have you try out for the team if you get in.

Coaches have a limited number of people they can vouch for with admissions. They generally won't waste them on kids who have not given them a commitment. They also don't ask for commitments from kids they aren't willing to use a slot on.

I am Male and I did not know if I should say the sport or not, but they did more than give me advice. I received a tour from the recruiting coach around the campus and stayed in touch with him often. The coaches said that they had done everything they can with admissions and that all I could do now is wait for a decision.

Where did you see a picture of the recruit who committed with their picture in uniform? The reason I ask is that so far USCGA have only offered a handful of appointments. My DS is a priority recruit for a sport at USCGA but the coaches have been very open in that their influence on appointments is not that great. They will support the application but the appointment decision is based on all the other criteria the academy uses.

This is just another part of the process. The waiting. If you have submitted your application and it is being reviewed you are exactly where most EA hopefuls are and you should be hearing something within the next 20 days. The struggle is real!
Good Luck! :)

It was just on a personal Facebook page. Also that was the impression that I was under, so seeing that he committed confused me.

A college can make you an offer and you can verbally commit, but nothing is binding until you sign a national letter of intent with college or in the case of a SA until you are offered an appointment and you accept with signature.
