Bat 21 was a movie that came out in the late 1980’s.
It is based on the true life story of a 54 year old Air Force Lt. Col. by the name of Iceal Hambleton. His plane was shot down over Vietnam. He ejected, and was able to evade capture for more than 11 days before being rescued:

His story was turned into a book, first, and then later a movie of the same name:
Fast forward to the 9 minute mark here (Iceal gives his own account):
As an avid golfer, his would be rescuers gave him distances and directions to go to get to a rendezvous point based off of golf courses he had played. The golf course thing was sort of a brevity code.
Stay all the way to the 42 minute mark.
The Navy SEAL Lt. who rescued him, Tom Rollins, was awarded the Medal of Honor. He later went on to become the founding member of the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team (HRT).
