Hey I'm planning on trying out for the Navy Wrestling team when I go to the academy this summer and was wondering if I absolutely had to register for NCAA because the registration fee is 65$. If I could do it later like after summer that would be a lot better because I would be spending the 65$ knowing if I made the team or not.

Thank you.

You shouldn't have to register online with ncaa because I believe that is only to register to be scouted. There should have been an eligibility card in your permit to report package.

I am pretty sure if you make the wrestling team, USNA will require you to register with NCAA.

Having gone through this with my DD (registering with NCAA after she got to the Academy), I would suggest you take care of it now. The registration not only requires a $65 fee but also requires you to complete a questionnaire about the courses you have taken, send in SAT/ACT scores and submit a high school transcript which might be difficult to arrange for once you are at the Academy (you will have no computer access during the summer, your hs may have limited hours during summer and someone will need to go to hs school during summer to arrange for a transcript). Also, if you make the team, you may not be able to work out with them until NCAA has confirmed your status.

Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) NCAA Compliance office might be a good place to get the definitive answers about what's required and the when/how. Tel 410.293.8936, or email compliance@usna.edu

(I am going to be apart of USNA 2015, writing on my mom's account right now:)
I am transferring as an athlete from another school so I have already dealt with the whole NCAA clearinghouse process and have a pretty good idea how it works....

you should be able to try out without paying the fee or going through the clearinghouse process BUT be aware that if you do make the team you will not be able to practice/compete until you have be deemed eligible by the NCAA - this means you must pay the $65 clearinghouse fee, fill out a number of ameteurism questionaires, and mail transcripts from your high school to the NCAA.

It is possible that this process could be slightly different for a student who is already in college as compared to a HS recruit - So, I would suggest emailing the wrestling coach with your stats - He'd probably be able to give you an idea on the likelyhood of you making the team thru try-outs and give you the best route to take with completing the NCAA clearinghouse process!! (you can find his email on the navy athletic website)

Good Luck!
