Regular Admission

My DS has completed everything and is 3Q just waiting. He did not apply anywhere else academy wise. Wanted CGA and only CGA. Plan "B", he will go full scholarship to the University of New Orleans because they have probably the best non-military Naval Architecture/Naval Engineering Program in the country and have a placement rate of 100% coming out of the program. If that's the route he must take, then he will apply to CG OCS after getting his degree.
CGA applicants are not "3Q" - you have either filed a completed application or you haven't.

CGA does not use the term 3Q, but it means qualified Academically, Physically, and Medically....IE: your application is complete and Board ready. And you have no outstanding items waiting for submission or approval. You can "file" a completed application but not be DoDMERB Qualified and therefore not 3Q. Just a term to indicate EVERYTHING is done and the Committee can consider you as fully qualified.

3Q has a very specific meaning with other branches, but is meaningless in relation to CGA. There is no specific academic test or bar for qualification at CGA, there is no mandatory minimum score you have to achieve on the PFE at the point of application, and the Dodmerb clearance is completely separate from and independent of the admission process at CGA. Academic and PFE performance (but not Dodmerb status) are considered as part of the admission decision at CGA, not separately decided by the academy prior to the admission decision being made, as is the case at other academies. With other academies, they will tell you you are 3Q and fully qualified for admission before the admission decision is made. That doesn't occur at CGA.

3Q is a complete misnomer in relation to the CGA. It has a very specific meaning in relation to other academies, but no meaning at all in relation to the CGA, and you shouldn't use it in reference to CGA applicants, because its just flat out wrong.

Did you DS get the Homer Hit Scholarship to UNO?

@USCG Master, unfortunately he was 20 points shy on his SAT's. But he still got a full ride based on UNO's financial aid, UNO allowing "Gulf Coast" residents in state tuition and fees, his Florida benefits, and his adviser told him to take the SAT's again and apply next year. He also has my VA DEA benefits if he needs them, and UNO is GREAT about outside paid internships in the area. As a Plan B he is looking forward to it. He was also offered a full scholarship to the Webb Institute, but he does not want to be in the NYC area. Can't say I blame him on that score, when we visited Webb it took us over two hours to go maybe eight miles on the expressway.

My DD applied to the USCG Academy 2 years ago. ACT score 33. Still not accepted. She was one of 15 to be awarded the Homer Hit. A full load scholarship. She is finishing her second year at School of Naval Architecture and Marine engineering at UNO.
