How many of you class of 23 people update(d) your admissions counselor regularly. Or ever after initial submit? What would be a worthy update example? FYI DS hasnt sent any updates so far as he didn’t know this was acceptable.

I didn’t know this was acceptable either. If I got an award after submitting my application do you update them?

DS ‘22 didn’t send any updates. They are looking for significant items. Such as earning team captain,
placing at State in your sport, some kind of academic honor or award, things of that nature. Significant things.

My son sent his All State football, All District 1st team football and his rank changed from 10 to 2 with the addition of weights which in my opinion is entirely too late! He was named Salutatorian also. His admissions rep didn’t request his updated transcript and hopefully added his goodies. He’s leaning hard to USMA so it is most likely a moot point.

Congrats salutatorian!!! Is it locked in at this point? DS school announces it after the final exams 2nd semester

Yes which I think is too early. Calc is getting tough along with physics and it changes things. I have advocated the the weights to be added at the end of junior year as his rank looked drastically different but the academies saw it before the increase. Waiting to me until the end for awards makes more sense to me.

My (unofficial view).
There is no need to update just to keep your name on the Admissions Office radar. There are so many applicants that they can't remember particulars of any individual, and you don't want to be the one remembered as "that guy/gal that keeps pestering us with updates..".

If it is significant, feel free to update. If not, just be patient and wait.

I updated with conference championship with my swim team, and about planning and hosting a MUN conference. I also updated with awards earned in late summer after I had already submitted my application. Personally, I think it’s a good idea to update if you have anything significant to share. It also shows persistence. But, like others have said above, update in moderation.

DD updated after application was CPR with one ACT result and one significant athletic result

Same here. My DS was named All Conference and All Academic in soccer after he submitted his application. He submitted this information through his admissions counselor. He also submitted his 7th semester transcript, which is now reflected in his portal. He is CPR hoping for for a med waiver.

DS updated (through his GC) that he was selected as the SPL of his Council’s NYLT program. He’s not sure USNA knows (or cares) about it’s significace but he gave it a shot anyway. It was a big deal to him.

What does it mean

Boy Scout of America - NYLT
National youth leadership training

SPL - Senior Patrol Leader - the highest leadership position for a youth to obtain at NYLT. Yes a big deal, should be added to resume.

TIP!
Suggestion to others, always spell out your achievements to the academies. Never use abbreviated letters or acronyms. We might know what it stands for but the person reading it at the academy might not know what it is and a big achievement could get overlooked.

USNA cares. Good call your DS sent an update. Council SPL is a big role.

You can no longer update your application because the deadline has passed. I just contacted my admissions counselor, and he would not accept my update.
